Earsay

Roger just rang to tell me that, in the elevated government circles that he moves in these days, the rumour is that when the Home Secretary was told about all these foreign johnnies being let out of prison, he was heard to say that he couldn't believe his ears.

Apparently efforts to reassure him that nobody else could believe his ears either did not have the desired effect.

I'm not sure if Roger hadn't better leave that sort of story to Nookie.

On those occasions when Charles Clarke and top cop Sir Ian Blair stand side by side to give a press conference or something, I've often been struck by the similarity between the two of them and PC Plod and Big Ears from the Enid Blyton books.

Do you think by any chance they are related?

I'm sure Nookie would be much more open ended with "I can't believe what you're expecting me to take in, in one sitting!"
Anyone that sympathises with the poor little fellow, could they please put their hand up and mumble through half closed lips.
