Ken Wills - The Gift That Keeps On Giving!

I'm indebted to one of my spies who's spotted that our local squillionaire Ken Wills, he of CGP/China Gateway fame, just doesn't seem to be able to stop handing over his dosh to good causes at the moment!

As well as 25,000 sponds to the Thanet South Labourites, and a rumoured £12,500 mazoulians from CGP for Margate's Big Event, it would appear Our Ken has just handed over a cool ton to Councillor Shirley Tomlinson's British Heart Foundation appeal. Of course, KW has every right to spend his dosh however he pleases, and nobody's suggesting there's anything untoward going on here. Shirl's appeal is for a splendid cause, and is inspired by the excellent help hubby Mick 'Mr Margate' Tomlinson received when he had a cardiac arrest back in February. Curious, though, that Ken should be handing out his hard-earned to such disparate local causes - a Tory council, a Labour MP, and a charity appeal run by a Conservative councillor who admires Maggie Thatcher and wants to bring back national service!

And one can't help wondering, what with the Big Council Meeting to decide on planning permission for China Gate coming up this Thursday, whether Mr Wills has distributed his largesse in such a seemingly random fashion elsewhere on the island?

Update: The Gazunder is now running the full SP on Ken's largesse here.

Seems that KW also offered the Thanet Tory parties £12500 each to North and South, but these were declined!

Never, ever, heard of someone offering money to both parties! Bet the Lib Dems feel like Billy no mates!

I wish her luck with the appeal...

It does make me laugh how these Tory types love Margaret Thatcher though - and then bang on about National Service.

That bloody woman was the one who created this me me me society that's resulted in the lack of discipline we see on the streets now!

Honestly!!!

What an excellent cause to support but it does beg the question of the closeness of the relationship between Mr Wills and Our Cabinet that he even knew about Cllr Tomlinson's bicycle ride on the 12th. And that's the problem. Mr Wills must surely realise that to sponsor a TDC Councillor who has a decision to make on a very important planning application submitted by his company CGP within a few days, could compromise her integrity and position regarding making an unbiased decision.

I wish her well in the aim of raising money for a cause that she clearly has good reason to support but perhaps she should have asked Mr Wills to make a direct donation to the charity rather than to her sponsored ride. I suspect I am being too puritanical but given the nature of Mr Wills' generosity in recent months, it is necessry for those holding public office to be utterly srupulous in such matters and to err on the side of caution.

It's what I might do if (a) I had access to piles of cash, (b) stood to make far, far more from the result of the actions of those I was trying to impress and (c) my applications was a bit... [weak|crap|lacking|suspect]*

Apostophes? Is that some kind of flashy coctail that you might find in the Space Bar (Presume you're talking about The Churchill Tavern. Big space with very few people filling it.)?

Anyhow, good old Kenny! Lovely to see him spreading the wealth, and admiring a leader that had ovaries the size of coconuts!

Our Shirl got some
coverage in Thanet Gazette, so old Wills obviously saw that!
I am doing the bike ride with my kids he can sponsor me if he wants although not a good idea as i am not likely to be bought like that -i dont fall to flattery probably why im not a Thanet councillor!

Watching the BBC programme on the Gateway tonight, Mr Wills said quite clearly that Ezekiel and his Tory fellows were "hosted" by CGP during their visit to China - flatly contradicting Ezekiel and Latchford's versions of events. Will that now come out into the open too at last - perhps at tomorrow night's Council meeting??

Not only does it contradict their version of events 8.40pm but there is also the little matter of their Form 3 declarations as part of their requirement to log as Councillors, any benefit in excess of £25. Cllrs Latchford and Ezekiel claimed as did Thanet Council Press Releases that Chinamex and The Chinese Government paid for the jolly to China in 2007. Who will be first in the queue to make a complaint to Standards for wrongful declaration? Roger Gough(KCC and fellow Director to Cllr Latchford in EKO) in April of this year quite rightly declared meals and hospitality enjoyed at the expense of CGP. Mr Latchford's declaration showed Chinamex and the Chinese Government as paying for the things. Who told the truth?

I see that the Tory Planning Chair, Ken Gregory, has introduced comment moderation on his blog (Village Voices) again. Probably very wise in all the circumstances!!!
