its just sickening that someone could do that to something valued by more than the towns residents

we are in a war zone without a war, either we do something or we don’t

The council say it will be rebuilt. Do we believe them? When you look at the state of Margate, how can you?

And whoever was responsible for this needs to be put away for a very, very long time.

I’ve just about had enough of incompetence & corruption that seems to pervade all sections of Thanet Life (the actuality not the blog), nothing will happen apart from residential development on the site, the council will ‘discover’ some clause in planning law that renders a rebuild redundant, contrary to the views of it’s own heritage advisors. The various shareholders/stakeholders will be exonerated & the perpetrators will get away scot free. The Police will balls-up any investigation, it will be relegated to a PCSO to don the deerstalker, whilst the upper ranks probably are in ‘somebody’s’ pay.

I don’t think this is a particularly Thanet issue either though, look at the situation of Brighton’s West Pier, allowed by local government to fall into disrepair, nothing done to compel it’s various owner in the post-war years to redress this, closed to the public, restoration plans scuppered by shoddy developers & then hay presto an ‘unexpected’ conflagration!

The legal & civil structures in the UK seem to have fallen apart, with unbridled capitalism (gangsterism) the clear victor. Thatcher & her atrophying of civic society has rendered local governance the preserve not of civic minded crusaders but the preserve of those on the make. I’m off to Zimbabwe, at least there you can see the mob coming!

As an ex margate man this is terrible news and makes me sick. You might as well turn the lights out the next time you leave Margate because if it does not get rebuilt i cant see much future for the town. I've always said if you pit the rides in dreamland people would come.
Unfortuatley thats not what some people wanted.

R.I.P Scenic Railway. There is no way they will have it rebuilt. My Grandfather worked on the building of this attraction. In fact my Mother and her sister rode on it before it was fully opened. What else is there left for the family visitors to Margate now? Some more flats!!!

It is early days to make any assumption of the cause, but the sad fact is it has not come as a surprise.

If the Council said it's going to be rebuilt, then that is definitely the end. More housing, more rates.

I mentioned the fire to someone who knows nowt about dreamland and they said "Godden?" they were not in the least bit surprised to discover he was connected. Most of us saw this coming but it is still very, very sad worse yet I think eric might be right.

I presume you mean connected with Dreamland, Matt, not the fire.

Sad and surprising (?) that despite their willingness to comment on many other subjects, not one of our blogging Tory Councillors has offered any comment on this tragedy - on these blogs.
