Does Bob Like Margate?

Reader Simon writes:

Dear ECR, I thought you'd like first dibs at these snaps I took of Sir Bob Geldof turning on Margate's Christmas lights earlier. There were hundreds of people there, Bob did quite a good job of sending himself and Margate up, calling it his 'penance' for describing the place as a 'dump', and asking whether the 'illuminations' had been bought from Woolies. Needless to say, Sandy was never more than a few feet from him, trying his hardest to bathe in some sort of reflected glory! There's also a short clip of his speech for you.

LOL he responded to the head of Hartsdown College's statement that his (Bob's) famous comment about Margate being ugly was 'a slap in the face for the kids of Margate' to the effect that 'the kids of Margate hadn't been slapped enough'!

The last two pictures sort of sum up the situation here in Margate. In the middle of the crowd is Clive Hart (in red), the real voice of local people in Margate and swanking around up front and trying to be important is Sandy Ezekiel. Surprise, surprise, Mrs Ezekiel apparently organised the non-political event.

Who's that tall b*stard just to the right of Clive in the crowd shot?

Its not one of those ugly bastard shell ladies trying to communicate with its queen is it?

Soon the main sands will be littered with face hugging shell ladies, in Margate no one will hear you scream!!???

I am really impressed with the speed of getting the pics and short clip onto the blog, Dickie. An IT type of Cllr chap, your Simon? Congrats! Most enjoyable.

Er, don't think it was that Simon, Bertie!

He's written his own version (see the sidebar).

Hi ECR - what a wonderful opportunity this story of yours gives to the sneering, green eyed, nobodies who frequent your blog to rubbish anything positive that ever happens to our town.

This has been a good week for Margate, and for the very few who cannot stand to see anybody but themselves having any kind of success, it must be gut wrenchingly awful to realise that there are people other than themselves who are sincerely trying to make things better, and having great success.

So, to the collective irrelevant morons of your blog, crawl back up your own backsides and fester there until heel freezes over. Which under the socialist repressive dictatorship like we are fast becoming, could be sooner than we think.

Yes it's great for Margate, all the closed shops were of course filled to the brim!

Margate is dead, killed by this council.

If you disagree, then have a wander around the streets and look at all the closed shops!

Don't care what old bollocks you spout, the shops are shut!

Go back to your cave, if risks with the way we do things weren't taken thats where you'd still be living. Evolution takes time and Margate will evolve.

Well, 9:34, I personally thought this was a positive story about Margate. If that's where you mean by 'our town'.

Of course, if that's the collective view of people in 'your town', it's not very surprising that it bears every resemblance to a shit heap, is it?

The event's real highlight was Sandy being boo-ed heartily by all and sundry. Democracy in action!

There is so much more to a town than open shops.

Apology accepted Bob.

Yer couldnt make it meself but have heard from those that were there that Mrs E was bossing everyone around and not letting anyone get close and also that Sandy got booed!

I was there and to be fair I did not hear anyone booing Sandy although the woman next to me was mutterring 'there's that Sandy Ezekeil, I don't like him' to her friends.

What worries me as a Ramsgatonian is that Margate seems to be getting all the 'jollies' and Ramsgate gets SFA. This was rumoured to have cost £20,000 (not including Bob who apparently gave his time for free).

Has anyone done an FOI to the council asking how much money has been spent on Margate compared to Ramsgate over the past five years?

What is that strange blue ribbon hanging from Ezekiel's belt? Couldn't be a pyjama cord, surely? Ezekiel was booed? Really?

Shame that the Thanet Life version has to come with references to all the frightfully important people the "Doc" knows - amazing he hasn't been able to incorporate all his famous ancestors as well - and one or two blue political jibes. He can't help himself...and he's back!

Who cares what Bob likes?

Are the Ezekiels going for a double act now? It would appear Mrs E is following Mr E with a Standards complaint against a former Mayor. Seems the poor love claims she was bullied in the office, speaks volumes that the Charter Trustees have ignored it, perhaps they realised the implications behind it, and the fact it came out after the Winter Gardens fiasco

Geddoff is right about Margit ..................... It IS ugly.
