East Of The Wantsum

Here's this week's EotW, which appeared in the Isle of Thanet Gazunder yesterday. Not a bad stab, seeing as I wrote it last weekend.

It's only the media that are getting all hot under the collar about this hung parliament thingo. Grey areas, indecision and delay don't make for good headlines. As far as I can see the country hasn't fallen apart while the politicians lock themselves behind closed doors and jerk off over their manifestos. It's the civil servants who actually run the show. A bit like our beloved council, really!

A good result if you ask me - the less the buggers can do the better!

Yep good result. I put two bets on a hung parliament back when the tories had a huge opinion poll lead.

As for my bet that Gordon Brown will still be PM on 1st June ??

And my bets that William Haigh and Alistair Darling will be next two party leaders ?

I would like a quid for every time some political twat has said "That is way above my pay grade".

I wonder what Sister Assumpta thinks ?

Presumably she's stuck in Ireland because of the cloud of volcanic ash?

*Apparently*, while no one is in charge, it's OK to smoke in the pub. Bloke in the pub told me that.

Interesting that the local personification of arrogance and pomposity - Thanet North Tory MP Roger Gale - has put his old MP website back up without a hint of thanks or even acknowledgement to those who re-elected him. Obviously the old bastard just took it for granted. Thank goodness I did not help him and his publicy-funded wife back to the trough for their snouts.

anon again!
What an ideal situation to be in! 3 Party's running the Country. What an exciting place to live in, with all parties doing their absolute best for Britain....

Oooops, sorry, just woke up!

I feel sorry for all those voters that supported the LibDems with the aim of keeping the Conservatives out. Its looking more likely that the LibDems will become the LibCons. Any LibDems that join the tory cabinet must fully support all the policies of the cabinet. This wont sit easy for many LibDems members, especially the "Dem" half of the party. What happens when the next election comes?

If the government has been a success and we all become prosperous then why vote for the LibDems. On the other hand if its a failure why vote for the Cons or their partners the LibDems.

Either way it looks like the Libdems could be squeezed out of existance the next time.

Tony Flaig - the loud-mouthed blogmeister of Bignewsmargate and card-carrying member of the Liberal Democrat Party - said this on Mark Nottingham's blog before the election:

"I cannot wait for Ladymans P45 hooray remember a vote for Ladyman is a vote for Cameron switch your vote to the Liberal democrat."

There must be times when you really do wish you had kept your gob shut. Poor old Tony... I wonder if he'll send his membership card back.

All of which proves you should only vote for the party you really support. So called tactical voting invariably goes wrong particularly as far too many Labour supporters, when it suits them, like to pretend they have lots in common with the Lib/Dems. Were that true we might as well just have two parties and ban all the others! What is going on at the moment does not bode too well for proportional representation!!

I think, Rock, that at the moment it is the Tories who are claiming they have "so much" in common with the Lib Dems. Under the unedifying spectacle of Cameron claiming to be acting in the national interest - as opposed to his personal and his Party's interest as is truly the case.

Seems to me that the largest party is trying to find some formula by which they can form a government whilst the losers are clinging on in hopes. Really doesn't matter who forms what coalition with who for it is all pretty shambolic and hardly endorses the cries for proportional representation. Incidentally, in whose interests is the late, great Gordon serving by clinging on - certainly not the Labour party's I would suggest.

I think it bodes very well for proportional representation. It makes a refreshing change to see politicians of different parties having to negotiate for power rather than grabbing it.

Only old school Tories like you, Rocky, are against PR because you know it would sound the death knell of the two party system.

And before you go accusing me of being a Lib Dem, I have in fact voted for all three at one time or another but have become totally disillusioned with a system that allows MPs to think they have a seat for life, or governments who only represent the minority of UK's electorate who voted for them.

Wow, Anon, now I am an old school Tory. Not bad for a state educated, ex council estate kid, eh? Mind you I can top you on variety of voting having cast my cross also for Ian Smith's Rhodesia Front and Bishop Muzerewa's Zimbabwe African National Union (now there is diversity for you). Basically, all I want, and I think the country needs, is a strong government to steer us out of the mess we are in before we finish up like Greece.

Richard Eastcliff said...

Would that be like Greece which also has a first past the post system, Mr Rock!

Bluenote said...

Sorry, ECR, but you are wrong. Greece operates the 'reinforced proportionality' system. I will leave you to look it up on Wikepedia but it is certainly not 'first past the post' and always results in hung, and might one say useless, governments. Prove is in the pudding and all that!

Richard Eastcliff said...

Oh well, I heard it on the bloody useless BBC, who presumably can't even be bothered to even make things up from Wikipedia these days!

Um Gordy is hanging on for the time being because constitutionally (and yes I know we dont have a constitution but you know what I mean) he HAS to while bum and bummer get their stories straight about how they're going to 'run' the government.

Wish to clarify an earlier comment. I have no idea who Prove is or if the good lady really is in the pudding club! Also not sure if the complete horlicks of an old saying resulted from senile dementia or latent dyslexia.
