Tunbridge Wells Snubbed, Ramsgate Rated

Staying with the tourism theme, I see that Royal Tunbridge Wellians are getting all hot and sticky under their starched collars after being left out of this year's Lonely Planet Guide. RTW councillor Elizabeth Thomas told the local rag: 'I'm disappointed, obviously, to be left out. I think we have a lot to offer visitors both in our urban and rural areas and I think when compared with some other areas in Kent there is no competition.' Ha!

Meanwhile the Millionaires' Playground gets glowing testimonials from Lonely Planet. The guide swoons:

More welcoming than jaded big sis Margate and livelier than twee little neighbour Broadstairs, Ramsgate is the kind of varied and often quirky resort town that can appeal to all ages. While families and surfers still splash about along the Blue Flag beach, cosmopolitan bars and easygoing street cafés line the marina and seafront promenade, and a different breed of cultural visitor is drawn to the town’s rich maritime history and neo-Gothic architecture. And picturesquely sheltered below the town’s handsomely arched harbour walls is a forest of rigging that creaks and whistles in the sea breeze.

I think they've got it just about spot on there!

Oh well. Development of Manston airport should put a stop to that.

The main thing that puts me off Ramsgate is the main shopping area, a confused mess & full of tattooed pot-bellied shaven-headed yobs (& that's just the women!). Love the harbour / seafront area and the surrounding old buildings though.

Peter is right, its like a bleedin mad max film in Ramsgate!

Does that mean you won't be coming to Ramsgate then Peter?

Phew.

Make your mind up Jean, last week you wanted me to come to Ramsgate so that you could show me around town...

Don't tempt him Jean the next thing you know he'll be wanting to snap your boobaloos for posterity.

Even I draw the line at Special Brew-swilling Ramsgatians with pitbulls on strings...

Nice picture on RTW though........

Enlighten us Don, what's RTW?

Doh! It's in the item - RTW - Royal Tunbridge Wells

He said "on" RTW, not "of", so that doesn't make sense.

......unless those Ramsgatians happen to be just about old enough.

ECR, are you sure your pic of Royal Tunbridge Wells was not taken on Ramsgate's Royal Sands last bank holiday? For the real Royal Tunbridge Wells click here.

Yep Anons 7:38 link has bettter piccies than the rubbish tip ECR depicts but I like his picture all the same ........ it has an element of rawness that one only finds in places as pretentious as those who play on royal connections Royal Parade Palace street Royal harbour etc we are all guilty of BIGGING OURSELVES UP ECR especially thats why I like the rubbish tip so much as I said a refreshing rawness. Now back to promoting Thanet as a Royal Playground fit for Kings

Royal Tunbridge Wells.....so suburban and what is it with the fecking Pantiles? Who cares? I saw them in 1979 on a school trip and never want to see them again, VERY BORING PLACE.

Retailers know a thing or two about a town. There are no pound or even 99p shops in Royal T.W! What about Ramsgate then?

Anonymous said...

We have a very busy 99p shop which is probably doing a helluva lot better than your poncy hand dried organic gourd stores over in RTW!

Retailers who survive know a thing or two about the state of the economy.

Anon 11:16, you are welcomed to parade on Ramsgate sands watching the old jumbos fly over, kitted out in you 99p bikini, 99p flip-flops, 99p sun glasses and covered all over with your 99p sun tan lotion, unless of course you have a 99p tan from a bottle.

p.s. I am staying in Ramsgate for a few days next week so I will look out for you!

12.13, the jumbos were also bought for 99p, worth 99p, carrying goods that sell for 99p, and bringing 99p to thanets economy.

The value they bring to NZ pensioners and the damage they do to the thanet environmemt? Priceless......

I have made my mind up Peter - you are a grossly rude man with dubious predilections. You have made your views of Ramsgate perfectly clear and since they are so born of ignorance and lack of empathy I feel there is little point in attempting to engage you in a serious discussion any longer. For some reason you sneer at Ramsgatonians and their town. That is the basis of your argument for airport expansion and, frankly, it's deplorable.

Jean, I think the technical term you are looking for rhymes with brunt and starts with a 'c'.

Jean, what part of "Love the harbour / seafront area and the surrounding old buildings" did you not understand?

Anyway, as you were going to take me on a tour of the Ramsgate "noise spots" but have bottled out, perhaps you can list the locations & times here? I promise I will check them out, & have my earplugs at the ready.....

P.S. I've just posted a blog on Ramsgate.
