Who Wants To Be A Thanet Mayor?

I don't. But I see there's been some discussion over on Thanet? Streuth! to that effect. The idea appears to be to gather a petition forcing our Jurassic junta of Tory duffers to hold a referendum under the Local Government Act or something. Such a petition would only require 5% of the electorate to precipitate a referendum, which amounts to something in the region of 3,500 signatures. Not a difficult target if you ask me. If the subsequent referendum, which TDC would have to pay for, goes in favour of a having a mayor then BINGO!, we get our very own Boris!

I have no idea which side of the Thanetian bipolar political spectrum this suggestion has come from. I assume that, as Thanet? Streuth! is fast becoming the rightful heir to Councillor/Doctor Biggles' 'popular but beseiged (but now completely comatose)™' Thanet Life blog, it must be some sort of dissident faction within the Conservatives, keen to tug Sandy's chain and get their hands on his baubles. If it is, it's hardly surprising. The Tories used to be very good at stabbing each other in the back, if you recall, over Europe. It doesn't take much to get them at each others throats, so why not a game of mayor culpa?

We dont want anymore useless office holders - the last winter gardens fisty cuffs was over how useless the deputy mayor was - it all costs money - which we havent got - instead of admin lets spend it on the town - keep up the tourist attractions - Ramsgate harbour looks empty opp the museum where there is no boat on show.
We want the existing office holders to work for us the electorate to improve our town. They shouldnt be doing the job for any other reason?
Listen to us - dont create any more ivory towers

I can recall the donkey in a cartoon gleefully jumping up and down saying 'pick me...me.

Hopefully the Donkeys, Duffers and Dinosaurs, in this case, will stay away from the Mayoral issue and we have someone that can actually steer the SS Thanet in the right direction?

The question is who, certainly not a political entity, but then again if we don't get someone with over 50% of the vote we will get More of the same.

I saw a dinosaur down on the harbour in Ramsgate yesterday being led by a young lady in s red dress - was it a mayoral candidate?

And of course you may get a Sandy Mayor, and of course an assembly with a tory majority, you could call it Thanet District Council

With some manipulation of boundaries Ramsgate First can get a Mayor elected.

Gerry Mandarin.

What with sinisters, dexters and "mayor" culpas it cannot be long before mens reas feature ?

I would vote Aitken for Mayor.

His surgery work is excellent because he is quick on the uptake and incisive (unlike Dr "Don't wanna get involved" Steve)

He is spot on behind the hospice movement and he can run marathons.

Sorted.

Hang on. Didn't we have a referendum on creating a Town Council for Ramsgate? What's happened to that? TDC will just ignore the result of any referendum. They know best.

there was probably a larger thanet turnout voting on "britains got talent" than there would be at any election/referendum.

maybe if we invited the 14 year old breakdancing schoolboy to run for mayor, we might be in with a shot.

And he couldn't do a worse job, could he

I came across, Dickie, to see if those distracting TECM types had descended on you en-masse and am slightly surprised they seem to be absent. Having been so distracting over at 'Thanet v China' (nice label!)recently, I was hoping they would get busy here with you. B***er! Had better get back and check they are not still busy there.

I don't think I'm their cup of tea Bertie. Too much yellow in the water over here on the south side!

Glad you like the new epithet. I thought it might lend you a touch of David and Goliath kudos!

I think this would be a good idea as long as we get a mayor for the people and not just another Tory or Labour stooge. As for the cost the new mayor's office would subsume some of the functions from TDC and KCC so the funds would just be transferred from them. There would of course be some additional cost but if we got a professional mayor's office running the island the extra would be justified in my opinion.

Richard I started to write out my thoughts on this one but it came out too long for a comment so I have posted it on my own blog.
