Nothing Sinister About Dexter

Eheu! Where else on the island would you get a Latin pun in your headline, eh? I'm wasted I tell you, wasted! No, well, er, moving on, I've got a bit more griff on Dexter Dias, one of the new owners of TransEuropa, our Ramsgate to Oostende (Ostend in old money) shipping line.

If you recall, Mr Dias Senior passed away last month, and ownership transferred to his two sons. Dex is apparently an internationally renowned barrister, who has prosecuted and defended in many high profile criminal and human rights cases. He's even had a play written about one of them. And in his spare time he writes John Grisham style bestsellers about how lawyers can solve everything, some of which have been optioned for film and TV. Now he can add roll-on, roll-off ferries to his list of impressive achievements.

Actually, a nice little earner like TransEuropa might come in handy should the thriller writing not go well. After all, one reviewer on Amazon describes Dex's Above The Law as 'derivative nonsense (which) reads like Rumpole of the Bailey on mogadoms'!

He should come down here and write a thriller about Thanet - arson, ruination, dodgy councillors, drugs, bent businessmen, its got the lot!

Shame if the trans europa goes as it has brought action - in the form of comings and goings to the town. Might well do if the Poles and other eastern europeans all stay in Poland as that seems to be its main car passengers - saves on their driving time apparently.
Ramsgate and Broadstairs seem to be the better of the towns on the surface just Margate needing the right management. Only go there to be dragged to pay for my teenagers purchases in Primark, if that goes there won't be any lure for Margate.

Speaking of food, I am soon in Ramsgate for a week, where can I get good fish and chips and can my wife have a good local crab?

Most people head for Peter's Fish Factory next to the Belgian Bar opposite the obelisk for fish and chips. The service is surly and slow but the grub's better than most. Be prepared to queue for ages if it's a sunny Saturday. The best chippy in Thanet is the Newington fish bar but that's a bit out of town.

Not sure where you can go for crab as there really doesn't seem to be a proper fish restaurant in town which is surprising. Perhaps Rick Stein should buy up the Pav and start one. There's a great fishmongers though (Eddie Gilberts on King Street) where you can get whatever you want if you're self-catering.

If you're in Boredstares you could try the fish and chip shop in Albion Street with the mural of Jesus on the side. I understand they do a piece of cod that passeth all understanding!

There is that 'only in the summer' cafe in Westcliff Arcade (at the bottom) he does a good crab salad, & then there is the Old Wine Warehouse (Ages?, two to try.

Hopefully the two sons will change their policy towards cyclists.
Thanet has nice cyclepaths but tourists who bring in money can't use them as TEF don't take bicycles.
Not everybody has a car.
According to them the port is unsafe. This while the port was safe enough when Sally ferries*RMT*Holyman was there.
Everybody is talking about CO2 emissions but if you want to take a CO2 low holiday you can't as TEF don't take bicycles.

Many thanks for the fishy advice, I know where you mean in Ramsgate.
