What A Load Of Rubbish

Tooling down to the Costcutter this morning for my copy of our local blue top, I came across this sorry sight:

We're told that Thanet Council, along with other agencies, are currently implementing 'Operation Clean Sweep' here in Ramsgate. I do believe they've missed a bit!

How about not blaming the council but the scroates who cause the litter themselves, i.e. people of Thanet. I have to admit a lot of them are pretty thick and can't workout what a bin is for.

I'm sure that the people in Herne Bay, Whitstable, Faversham, Deal & Walmer are very similar, but whenever I visit these places they always look much, much cleaner. So I think TDC (or the people they employ) ARE to blame to some extent.

Why can't one of the refuse collectors follow behind and just pick up any stray bits and pieces that have escaped from sacks or bags ripped open by seagulls? If they are not cleared away straight away they can blow about the streets for weeks. Alternatively make everyone responsible for clearing the pavement outside their own house like they do in most European countries.

If the council could work out a plan to get wheelie bins and recycling going in this area it would be a start at the moment bin bags are left out overnight and the seagulls attack them and the street cleaner doesn't come around until the day after the bin men (why?) or as in this case not even for a fortnight.

The Council hasn't issued us with wheelie-bins and so we have to use dustbins. If we just put bags out the seagulls rip them to shreds and scatter rubbish up and down the street. However, when we put bins out the idiots on the dustcarts take the bags out of the bins and pile them up by the side of the road ready for collection. In the 10 minutes that elapses between them doing this and arriving to collect it, the street looks like a scene from Apocalypse now. In my street the rubbish is collected on a Thursday and the mess is still there on the weekend. Don't tell ME to phone the Council. I shouldn't have to phone the Council. The morons who are making the mess drive the dustcarts and they know they are making the mess. Why don't they phone the Council...or better still, clean it up themselves. That might give them an incentive to leave the bags in the bins until the dustcart is ready and waiting. At the end of the day, I don't think the people working on the dustcarts take any pride in the work they do.

So where in Thanet are there still dustbin collections? I am in Westgate and we have wheelie bins as does my family in Broadstairs.

How about a seagull cull, might as well do a pigeon one at the same time

Time to take responsibility ourselves for this sort of problem? TDC cannot be blamed for this. The 'state will do everything for us' culture is invidious. It takes only a moment to pick up rubbish on your own doorstep/in front of your house. We all have a role to play in keeping Thanet tidy.

Anonymous 11:33pm - there are loads of places in Thanet who still have dust bins & not wheelie bins. My mother in law in Cliftonville for example & my daughter's boyfriend in Ramsgate. Apparently, not all roads are suitable for the wheelie bin collection lorries.

The main obstacle to introducing wheelie bins in some parts of Thanet has always been the Georgian houses with area steps to the basement. Most of them are in multiple occupancy now and have no land to store bins which would mean for each house you would have four wheelie bins blocking the pavement. A better solution would be hopper bins at ends of streets maybe? Or more frequent refuse collections? In Brussels they collect the rubbish every day. People therefore need much smaller bins and there is less need or temptation to dump rubbish sacks in between collections. We need more frequent collections not fewer. Surely our health and safety and preventing a 21st century plague should come first when the council consider their budget.

A cull is a stupid idea. Within a couple of months, the population will be back to the same levels.
How about that E word. What is it? You know? Where you tell people why things? Oh yeh Public Eduacation.

As i drive to Ramsgate every day to drop my kids off - it seems full of rubbish, Ramsgate worse than Broadstairs or Margate, maybe they dont have so many street rubbish collectors? Agree about being responsible for ones own rubbish, i had to hose my wheelie bin out - full of maggots as rubbish sits in there 2 weeks not at all hygiencic, luckily i can get the hose to it - if you couldnt you would have to put up with stinky bins! (i did for 2 weeks!)
Think first impressions are very important and all ye councillors reading this - think our shirl is is charge of rubbish? get your act together and keep our towns clean esp Ramsgate?

Many of the properties in this area don't have wheelie bins OR dustbins. It is senseless to leave even industrial strength bin bags out in the open as the seagulls will peck through anything but where are people to keep them, in their house? The council should at least provide dustbins - people in this area are generally not the public spirited/moneyed sorts who will go out and buy a bin just to help the local environment, It is becoming a health issue and surely the council must be responsible for addressing it.

I live in 1 of 7 flats in a house in Westbrook, & we're not supplied with wheelie bins OR dustbins. There's a couple of those big industrial-sized bins at the end of the road, but many people who live aroud here are either too lazy or too frail to carry their rubbish far.

Operation Clean Sweep should investigate the property on the corner of Truro Road and Augusta Road in Ramsgate - Dorchester Mansions? It is in a right state and is multiply occupied.

My suggestion is that instead of taking your camera with you next time you and your entourage step out on to the streets, why not get one your minions bring some black plastic sacks, with which would you would then fill with rubbish.

Such a display of care for the environs of Ramsgate, would no doubt humble even the most untidy of rascals that inhabits Ramsgate's Eastcliffe thus inspiring them to change their ways.

I believe its time for you Eastcliffe, as some one we all look up to, lead the way.

There you are a street cleaner now - you've found your true vocation!
Not too intellectual i hope?

We have 54 Councillors on TDC and many of them represent areas that are being destroyed with the tide of rubbish and litter. How come not one Councillor is getting up and shouting about this at Council meetings? Have we really elected such a bunch of blinkered toadies that they believe their sole function is to vote for whatever their leader tells them to vote for? Do they never walk arounfd the towns where they live? (I never see them). What's the point of Councillors if they do nothing? Who represents Central Westcliff and what have they done lately?

When contacting TDC regarding the split bags and the fact that the roadsweeper comes usually (if somewhat erratically) the day before the rubbish is collected, I received an email from a TDC employee (name witheld!)suggesting that I double bag the rubbish to stop the birds, or buy better quality bags!!! He obviously hasn't worked out yet that it isn't only me in the road that is having the problem it is the whole area!! Perhaps he could give us bird proof bags until they roll out the wheelie bins. I hear they give clear bags to houses that aren't suitable for wheelie bins in Margate, so what more would a few cost?

Do TDC employees live in the same world as the rest of us?

NO, they live in Whitstable!
