Postcards From The Edge

Reader Kathy has sent me some snaps from her holiday on the north of the island. Let's take a look, shall we?

No, well, er, you didn't exactly take the scenic route there Kathy. Later, it seems, she decided to drop the kids off at one of Margate's fabulous fun centres...

...before heading off for a spot of retail therapy...

Er, well, I trust you enjoyed your hols Kathy. Maybe next time it would be better to stay on the much more salubrious south side:

These would obviously be good choices to illustrate the next edition of the alternative guide to Thanet - hopefully more people will send you snaps during the summer hols

Yes, I do hope so.

The back (seafront view) of the Winter Gardens looks worse than any of these...

The lack of maintenance at the Winter Gardens is a disgrace. When will this council learn that the cost of a lick of paint every year is far less than a total refurb when the thing rots to the ground? Oh but then when it gets to that stage it goes on the assets disposal list and they get shot of it. And when the developer then folds we are all left to stare at a rotting heap which was once one of our assets. To coin a phrase they are a bunch of f*cking tossers.

Oh dear. More non-news from ECR. Ramsgate is prettier than Margate. Wow.
The site in Cliftonville has been hoarded and will hopefully, credit crunch permitting, be developed. A business is struggling to survive after the owners of the Dreamland site shut the car park. Cliftonville s**theads have nothing better to do than vandalise a sign.
I prefer to think in terms of solutions. I hope that the new properties attract buyers who will boost the economy. I hope that TDC will find a way to sort out the Dreamland problem. It's a long shot but I also hope the parents and teachers of Thanet may tell kids that there are more interesting things to do with their lives.
It isn't that nothing is being done, it's just that it takes time. It's a long document but look at http://www.margaterenewal.co.uk/pdf/Whole%20Agenda_web.pdf.

just had Scottish friends down - they've started their hols - there are plenty of good things to do - been beaching until it rained us off.
Tomorrow going on the bus - a novelty for some kids! to Broadstairs and Ramsgate, followed by a boat trip.
It will happen one day, keep meeting lots of London families decamping here for the better schools and lifestyle.
I do agree some parts are awful but there are things to do with imagination - if it really is too wet we will go to Quex museum or Ramsgate museum.
I'm not defending the management of TDC though - believe me they do not deserve to be let off the hook nothing to draw us to Margate as a family apart from a quick harbour wall walk !

Well I wish I could inhabit Planet Maisiegrace. It must be lovely walking around seeing only a Teletubby landscape like that. Unfortunately in the real world, things aren't quite as rosy.

Whatever you're on MG (Tubby Custard?) can I have some!

You are right 7:29 there are plenty of things to do around here you just have to seek them out; at the very least if it's a nice day there are our gorgeous beaches.

Yes, the beaches are lovely IF it's a nice day!!

Maisiegrace is living on a different planet to Planet Thanet though!

The biggest problem with a lot of the kids in Thanet IS the parents!

They have sponged off the system for years and still run car, TV, holidays etc. so why should the next generation be bovvered!!

What example do they have to follow!

Your tone is very reminiscent of Dr Who/Where Is He Now? Maisiegrace.

Are you sure you haven't regenerated???

No, I've been me for as long as I can remember eating custard.

MG - I hope you get the intended humour of some of my posts and comments. As regular readers know, most of the drivel I write here has to be taken with a very large pinch of irony.

You will more often than not find me 'moaning' about Margate - that's because I live in Ramsgate, Thanet's premier town! Overall, though, I'd like to think all us whingeing bloggers have the island's best interests at heart. I was once a DFL myself and can remember the days when I too thought everything in the Thanet garden was rosy. Which it pretty much is at first glance. I mean, beaches, bars, some great architecture, a mostly terrific environment and a sense of community aren't to be sniffed at!

Don't worry - of course I get it, and you can even amuse me sometimes. I just get annoyed when are irresponsibile. I believe the only way to improve this place is to encourage more DFLs, and any reading your blog are going to be put off. I'm not sure that's what you would really want either.
I'm probably just as much of a cynic as you but I am selective about what I say in public.

Well I'm not sure it's the case, MG, that people would necessarily be put off by my moany jottings. I've had many an email over the past two and a half years from potential DFLs who say they've enjoyed reading my nonsense, got the jokes, cried at the sad bits, and have consequently been even more encouraged to move down the the tip of Kent because it's given them a sense that there are people in these parts who care about their community.

Good heavens, they should be giving me the estate agents' Blog of the Year Award!

Oh yes, my dear, you should definitely be presented with a BOTY.

Richard Eastcliff said...

You can shake your foamy BOTY in my direction any day of the week, Lucy old bean! BTW, speaking of boaties, will you be participating in the water skiing championship nest week? I here they need some floating channel markers!
