Bangin'

Yes - it's all go Margate! This weekend sees a cornucopia of poorly-publicised activities across the north of the island!

Arsongate's 7-day Big Sky Jazz Festival kicks off tonight at the Mike and Bernie Winter Gardens. Then tomorrow it's Margate Pride, which I see has been renamed 'Thanet Pride in Margate' this year in a vain attempt to suggest that it's inclusive of us poor sods here on the underfunded and woefully neglected south side. Meanwhile you can boogie all weekend to the sounds of UB40 and Scouting for Girls at the Sound Island Music Festival at Quex Park.

Still, to be honest it's not all Margate-centric. On Sunday it's Ramsgate Carnival, and the same day sees the start of the first ever, week long Ramsgate Historic Festival billed as 'all action from Eastcliff to Westcliff'. Expect to get your pulse racing with morris dancing, a human chess game and a teddy bears' picnic, culminating in a full scale re-enactment next weekend of the Napoleonic (or should that be 'Wellingtonian'?) Wars. Maybe one way or another Ramsgate will be bangin' after all!

Tdc surely could do alot more to publicise events in Thanet, ie who would kmow there is free parking on saturday in Margate or there is Pride etc? Margate is cuurently in a very poor state to benefit from any current upturn of popularity of seaside resorts due to the credit crunch, and advertising events would help.

Huge traffic jams around Quex Park late this afternoon. Over an hour in a jam in Acol. A bill for my time is on its way to the organisers. They must have realised the disruption this would cause but did nothing about it.

Lots on at the eastcliff bandstand too on Sunday - not a lot of people know that!

Margate was buzzing today - lots of Pride, good live music and on the beach black families from London enjoying a day out with plates of jerk chicken and their own music blaring out from speakers near the prom - strange mixture but it was nice seeing everyone out enjoying themselves

Absolutely agree, also the harbour arm is packed out with people enjoying themselves, the beach is full, there is a free art workshop on the main sands good stuff all round!

Today was good. Just shame there is little else to do in Margate, ie shops etc. If it had rained what would the visitors have done? Margate is in a poor position to take advantage of the resurgance of Uk hoildays. Roadside signs still point motorists/visitors to the shell caves, Dreamland, are these still open?

Tried to find the Napoleonic soldiers three times but to no avail, driving over from Broadstairs with my kids . Please give us some sort of programme or accessable website so as to work out what is going on. We saw some funny french funeral style jazz players in the evening which was nice but a folk festival style programme flyer would have really helped.

I would have thought that the clue was in the name RAMSGATE Historical Festival,

Margate was rocking all weekend, loved the reggae party on the beach by the boating pool today (Sunday)... but was it official? more people at that than anything else.

The Napoleonic re-enactment is next Sunday - there is a programme for the whole week but you might get charged a pound for it - however at Ramsgate carnival they were handing them out free! There will also be fireworks on Saturday in Ramsgate

Carnival...Ramsgate still has a carnival when did this happen?

For heaven's sake! Does anybody actually read the item before diving into the comments? It was all explained there. Kuh!

so 7.58, you come from Broadstairs, you seem to like personal insults, your initials arent S.E. by any chance ?

Any fule kno that the correct Anglo-centric term for the period involving the Iron Duke and some short arsed Frenchman is "Wellingtonics", pronounced as if you were ordering a drink.

Apparently the fun fair promised for the whole week has gone off in a huff because of something that upset them on Sunday and the craft fair in Charlotte Court has not materialised. Has anyone been to Ramsgate's own version of The Last Choir Standing at the Eastcliff bandstand yet?
