High Street Blues

Holy high streets! Has anyone else noticed the number of shops and restaurants that have closed in the past few weeks?

Two shops and a restaurant gone in Margate old town, a shop and a restaurant down and out in Ramsgate. Even Canterbury with its gazillions of tourists was looking a bit shabby last time I visited. I went there especially to shop at Gap, but they'd long scarpered, leaving a different kind of gap.

Still, at least petrol's six pence a litre cheaper in Canterbury, for those of you who are still reliant on gas guzzlers. That's because Tesco, who seem hellbent on treating the island as their own personal fiefdom, have a monopoly on 'cheap' petrol here in Thanet and can therefore make it as, er, expensive as our distorted local market can stand. Anyone for Asda at Arlington House?

Which shops have gone in the old town?

Asda at Arlington House would be fine by me. I don't care if it's C&A or Rumbelows, as long as SOMETHING is done.

Peter no chance not even a Maypole, Pricerite, Ratners, Our Price, Timothy Whites, Courts etc.

I blame the government for taking away all those grants Thanet once received and for only giving business help north of Watford.

Tesco and Sainsbury opposite each other and they match each other on petrol prices. If one is ripping us off so is the other. Wonder why Asda dont do what Tesco Manston Rd did and go above ground THEN TESCO WOULD REDUCE THE PRICE.

Which restaurant in Ramsgate is down and out? Not Harvey's? Actually, I would hope it is Harvey's having had an overpriced, lousy meal there.

Rumour is there's a bailiff notice on the door of Portobello.

River Island is the shop that recently closed in Ramsgate. In Margate the guy from the Flower Lab disappeared a while ago and rumour is that No 6 Brasserie has conked out.

I think it should be turned into a school. Most areas only need a lick of paint. Just put a fence round the bottom area (to keep the kids in) and hey presto! A new Hartsdown School in a nicer location.

Then MOVE and abandon your Thanet giro mentality ?

What has the Thanet workforce got to offer that would justify employment investment ?

What has Thanet Council got that would justify employment investment in the area ?

What have the local schools got that would persuade a prospective investor that there is a basis for further education devloping expertise ? "Grammar Schools" who use a number of validation bodies so they can shop around, subject by subject, for the easiest O levels ? Bullshit in an area of bullshitters.

Face it Thanet f*cked itself but there is always the council to blame.

Career choice in Thanet for a girl ..... become a single mother on benefits or clean geriatric arses on national minimum wage. And that is the result of too much change of use consent for Costa Geriatrica going back to the 1950s.

I'm not surprised No 6 has conked out. The prices were ridiculous for Margate, and the food was very, very ordinary. Not keen on getting my dinner served on a slate floor tile either.

I'm all for a Micky D on the top floor of Arlington House, with the only access to it via the stairs.
They could call it their Clown In The Clouds branch.
Apologies for any heart attacks that that may cause fatties, in advance.

Let it please be noted by everyone:
It was a Conservative/LibDem Government that made those urgent Educational cuts.
I wonder what else will be manufactured by these people.

Let us not forget the 5,500,000 unemployed from the previous Tory regime.

Days of more gloom are coming, hold on to your cash, you are severely going to need it in the coming years. Mark my words.

This made me feel quite humble. Please let it remain here or add it as a special link.

Cavallinos are taking over Portobello apparently. You won't be able to park along Harbour Parade for the Ferraris.

Looks like Stephen Roper from the Old Town Gallery in Margate has done a runner too.
