By George! It's The BNP!

Surely it's no coincidence that a leaflet for the BNP dropped through the letterbox here at the old cliff top mansion this morning? With today being St George's Day, perhaps they're attempting to ride on the back of whatever English national fervour is knocking about in these parts.

Among the serried ranks of happy (white) smiling supporters, the leaflet promises that the BNP 'does not 'hate' anyone', whilst explaining that our taxpayers' sovs 'shouldn't be wasted on expanding 'Europe' so that millions of Muslims in Turkey can join the invasion of foreign job-snatchers'. I was tempted to fill in their membership form under the name of 'Mr P Niss, 2 Bollocks Street, Shuvitupyerjacksington, CL1 NTS', but that would just be petty, wouldn't it? Besides, despite a sign on the form assuring me that my information would be 'Data Protection SECURE', wasn't it the BNP whose membership list was comprehensively leaked last November?

Mind you, it wasn't just the BNP cashing in on, er, St George fever today. The lovely Laura Sandys, Tory candidate for South Thanet, also dropped by with her latest literature which among other gems tells us that the Blue Rinsers have been 'pushing KCC to secure a pedestrian crossing for Queens Street' here in the Millionaires' Playground, and had 'brought Keith Ferrin who is responsible for roads to see for himself the traffic along Queen Street'. Well is it 'Queens Street' or 'Queen Street' where you want the crossing, Laura? Do make your mind up, it could make all the difference!

Of course, all this leafletting is courtesy of the county and European elections on 4 June. We're also meant to be voting for our very own, teeny-tiny town council here in Ramsgate on the same day. But it all seems to have gone very quiet on that front. I was expecting to have heard the word of G O'D by now, but not a sausage!

A briefing for election candidates was held at Cecil Street last Monday. Any candidates for Ramsgate Town Council must have their nominations in by May 7th. Then candidates will be officially announced. I have heard that there are at least four independent candidates hoping to stand in Ramsgate but nothing is official till after 7th May.

Those of us who are unfortunate enough to live in Roger Gale's constituency have all received a glossy covered leafet from him delivered by the Royal Mail.

It is the first time he has been "in touch" since the last election, and it is, of course, also inspired by the forthcoming elections - but timed so that it does not have to be recorded as an election expense. Tories can never be a**ed to keep in touch routinely with those they serve.

It is Tory Party political, yet - it says - it has been funded through his Parliamentary allowances. So we the taxpayers not only pay for his wife, but also for his propaganda activity.

Nice!

Funny that - I received a letter from Steve Ladyman and an Eastcliff Labour Group leaflet today and a few days ago a newsletter from Laura Sandys - I'm afraid the BNP leaflet delivered last week went straight in my blue topped wheelie bin for recycling so I've no idea what it said.

Not likely to be many independent candidates for the Ramsgate Parish Council elections. It wasn't advertised properly and the Gazette made sure they didn't give it any prominence. Those outside the political circle don't know about it. I suspect we will just get a selection of the usual suspects plus Gerry to vote for. It all rather defeats the object of having a parish council.

free speech is only free speech if its left wing free speech!

I wonder if Anon of 4.34 pm is an official spokesperson for the Conservative Party? Nice to know that democracy is so alive in the world you inhabit. You are probably swaddled in a St George's flag as we speak.

And actually, Anon 6.47, most of the commentators who hold left or left of centre views seem to be able to express them without the hostile filth or threats that constantly surge from the mouths or fingers of the political right locally. So I don't think your point has the correct target.

There is still time for any Ramsgate resident to put themselves forward as a candidate for the town council. The Notification of Election comes out today - Friday.

Not one to defend the Conservative district councillors, but Roger Gale is there if you need him and if approached with a problem tries to help. He attends many local functions etc. 1.40 obviously isnt involved with any charitable or uniformed organisations otherwise they would have seen him since the last elections.
I agree with 8.08 the Conservatives locally do themselves no favours with the unpleasantness they keep spouting and now the Doc is the following suit, very different from DC's cuddly feely tories!

It is the electorate who elect Gale, not the "charities and uniformed organisations". It is the electorate who should hear from him. And for the record, I am involved in charitable activity, but it involves the gay community and those suffering from AIDS. Roger Gale would have no interest whatsoever in those areas.

Latest I read was that Ramsgate Town Council (once elected) may not be able to use Albion House for meetings because Steve Ward said he was not allowed to hold his surgeries there because they constitute "a political meeting" but the whole point of wanting a Ramsgate Town Council is that it gives townsfolk who are not attached to any national political party a chance to represent their town - the town council will not be labour, tory or anything else so it is not a political meeting in the same sense of the word surely?

Surely TDC have an obligation to find Ramsgate Council a place to meet? What are they going to do otherwise, meet in the Belgian Bar?

What about the £40K TDC have just saved by not having a powerboat or water ski weekend here in Ramsgate this year? Couldn't some of that be used to provide a venue?

Far more in keeping with the St George's Day tradition is an excellent beer from Shepherd Neame called Dragonfire. Available for a short time only, it's worth looking out for. Bound to be in one or two Fannit watering holes over the weekend.

Overheard on the Eastcliff - Labour county councillor when told an independent candidate was standing for the Ramsgate town council in his ward said very arrogantly "They won't win" - that is just the sort of attitude we want to get rid of in local politics and why some independent candiadtes should stand.

I got one of Ms. Sandys' glossy leaflets by post as well as one through the door. I was intrigued to read about the Tory candidates for Cliftonville and Broadstairs but a fuzzy picture of the Ramsgate candidates without any names attached. Haven't they got any KCC candidates they or are they just a bit shy?

"They won't win" - that is just the sort of attitude we want to get rid of in local politics and why some independent candiadtes should stand.

Sadly, the elections have not been widely advertised, and finding out how to stand has not been made easy. Even when you find out how to stand you have a fair amount of anally-retentive form-filling to do. The political parties have anoraks who sort this out for them. This is how they can put up illiterate tw*ts for election. Any other illiterate tw*t who wants to stand has no chance.

Compulsory voting. It works in Australia. Bring it on.

Or are the existing parties scared of what would happen if the unwashed masses actually voted?
