Public Inconveniences

As promised a while ago, here's my map of where the council have taken the piss out of Thanet in the recent past. From south to north, we have:

1. Ramsgate Western Undercliff
2. Ramsgate West Cliff Hall
3. Ramsgate Queen Street (now a sandwich shop)
4. Ramsgate East Cliff (sands)
5. Ramsgate East Cliff (demolished)
6. Ramsgate Marina Road
7. Ramsgate Boundary Road (on asset sale list)
8. St Lawrence
9. Ramsgate Margate Road
10. Broadstairs Vere Road car park (rumoured to be closing)
11. Broadstairs Albion Street car park
12. Broadstairs Harbour Street ('under repair')
13. St Peter's railway bridge (demolished)
14. St Peter's centre (now a house)

It seems the Cecil Square duffers, true to their Margatecentric form, have concentrated the closures on the south and east of the island. If you have a favourite former khazi that I've left off the list, do let me know and I'll add it. Let's keep our legs crossed that they don't shut any more!

Click here for council's list of public dunnies that are still 'open'

You also forgot the one in Vere Road car park and the one where there is now a seated area just by the Horse and groom, both in Ramsgate

Vere Road Car park, Broadstairs to be closed, I believe.

St. Peter's Railway Bridge, Broadstairs demolished. Was rather smelly but handy as located by the bus stop.

St. Peter's next to the (now)take-away (once the old Toc H Hall) was a lawnmower repair shop now a private house.

There used to be toilets in the cliff opposite Churchills and also down the hill opposite what used to be Neros Nightclub

Thanks for those. I'll update the map.

Yes I was going to mention the ones near churchills but I had only heard of them, never actually saw them so I was unsure of their actual existence!

they may be open in margate BUT they close just as the trippers leave the beach and need a pee before the journey home. the idiots who are in charge could not organise a piss (up) in a bog!!

Most of the toilets in North Thanet got demolished or bricked-up years ago. Grenham Bay & West Bay (Westgate) are two that spring to mind. Also I believe the toilet in Dane Park is now closed.

Is the loo in Margate old town still open?

The viaduct loos in Ramsgate opposite the derby arms

Most on your list were closed by Iris.

opposite Dane Park Margate they have closed, down by the lifeboat house in margate

the loos in the old town at the back of the Mayor's parlour are still open and are the worst signposted toilets ever.No one can find them...probably why they are still open, council don't realise they are there yet!

There also used to be underground loos opposite Arlington House similar to the ones near the harbour (the light panels can be seen in the pic below), but as they were replaced by other toilets then I guess they don't count...

You forgot Cannon Road Car Park ECR old bean! :o)

Cripes! At this rate I'm going to have to radically rethink the map to fit them all in!

Are the toilets near the viking ship still open?

Ramsgatonian with weak bladder said...

Obviously a topic of great concern to us all - millionaire or pauper we all need to pee - public toilets are hardly a luxury are they?

Anonymous said...

I think the Viking Ship loos are at the discretion of the concessionaire. If it's still the grumpy old c*nt who was running the kiosk a couple of years back, probably not.

Maybe they should never have closed the Public Baths / Toilets that were down by ramsgate harbour and refurbed them insted. Apparently they are still there but covered over. And are the ones at St Lawrence still open?? On a side note, the lack of litter bins in Ramsgate town seems to be a problem too.

The TDC webiste lists the Albion Street Car Park loos as being open. Funny that when they were closed and boarded up weeks ago.

I think the best advice if you need a loo in Broadstairs is....good luck.

At what point can we withold all or some of our Council tax? They can't keep charging ever increasing amounts for ever decreasing services, can they?

Anonymous said...

Good idea anon 6:56, but it'll take more than someone anonymous on a blog to organise it...

Where's a chap supposed to go to loosen his breaches these days?

Actually it says Albion Street toilets are "not in use":

Are Minster toilets still open? They're not on the website.

The pubs round the Albion Street area now have signs up saying they're charging for anyone who wants to use their loos. Some of the cafés also have signs up.

After all they have to pay for cleaning, supplies and in many cases are on a water meter.

Great welcome to our visitors.

Not much point listing on a website a public convenience that isn't a convenient stop for anyone.

I know the loos in the car park behind New Look by Clarendons art department bit are still open, I used them yesterday (unless sneaky TDC have closed them down in the last day or so...) but personally I prefer to use the loos in the red lion!

Update on the loos at St George's Green in Cliftonville. Closed for months, then opened to conform to Blue flag presumably, now closed again while maintenance takes place.
Couple of Mears vans parked there. Chances are they have been vandalised again which is ostensibly why they were closed for so long. (yeh right)
Scroats and drunks and persons who like sex in toilets are a constant battle here.

Peter C said...

They need to employ full-time attendants at all public toilets to keep them clean & stop them from being vandalized. Not employing them is a false economy.

Greetings from the North Eastcliff old bean, the ones at beresford gap in Birchington have long been boarded up and the ones at Minnis bay have been bricked up and plaster over!

Peter C said...

Yes, Beresford Gap! That's what I meant when I said "Grenham Bay". Are the other toilets (near the bike hire place) still open at Minnis Bay?

Also I'm still wondering about Minster toilets. Unlike Acol, Manston, Pegwell & Monkton, Minster has lots of shops, so public toilets there are essential.

Thanet Cottager said...

Would you mind pointing out which ones are still open?

Click on the link at bottom of the item TC.

Thanks for all the gen on this everyone. I'm clearly going to have to go away and do a bit more research before the map can be called definitive.

Maybe I'll get my old showobiz chum George Michael down from London to, er, give me a hand.
