There's A Kind Of Hush

Lumme! I really am stuck in a 60s groove at the moment, now I'm getting an attack of the Herman's Hermits!

What I meant to say was how marvellously peaceful it's been here in the Millionaires' Playground for the last week or so without those knackered old Jumbo Jets flying over every ten minutes. And as far as I know, nobody's even had to chain themselves to the RAF London Kent Ramsgate Manston International Airport gates to achieve it!

Actually, you could say it's been a bit too quiet. I mean, isn't this the peak holiday season? Aren't there meant to be queues as far back as Bristol just to check in at Heathrow? And haven't several people recently died of old age waiting to go through security at Gatwick?

So where's the thriving holiday traffic Manston were boasting about in the papers just a week or so ago? Not one of my roof tiles has been blown off by a jet aircraft for days. Not that I'm complaining. As you know, I'm currently running a No.10 petition to get our local council to implement better regulation of those blasted training flights. And as part of my campaign, I've already had some interesting feedback from Airport Watch and the Campaign to Protect Rural England, so watch this (air)space!

Last time I checked there were 22 signatures on you petition, even for the militant hoards in Ramsgate who daily find tyre marks on their roof tiles from lumbering Jumbo's this seems a remarkable low turn out from the Militant Ramsgate Luddite tendency.

God Bless and protect RAF LONDON-MARGATE-MANSTON KENT INTERNATIONAL AIRORT from Ramsgates Millionaire Nimbys.

Well that's 50% up on last week, so if that rate of growth continues by the time the petition expires in January 2008 I'll have 48,770 signatures! The entire population of Ramsgate and then some. Smashing!

I'll think you'll also find that people who believe in rampant airport expansion are the Luddites these days.

Besides, it's only the pointless oozalum flights training Australian pilots in how not to crash on our beautiful town that I'm against. As I hinted at in my post, being an opinionated taxpayer you may want to ask why all our money has been spent on an airport that doesn't appear to have any planes flying in or out at the height of the season.

ECR are you sure you are not a politician? "50% up on last week", on July 19th you had 16, you now have 22, no how much i try to fiddle the numbers i cannot get 50%. Politicians might, but i can't.

A politician? What a slur! Well maybe it's more like 40%, but that rate of growth would still see tens of thousands of signatures come next January!

Aha 11:30 and look who's just flown over. Must have known you were getting withdrawl symptons ECR. Nice to see it again.

Unfortunately the airport was there in 191?(not sure but 16 comes to mind)and no matter how many people complain it has made noises in the past. Remember Concorde? remember the USAF base when they flew all day and night? and how would we have survived without the Spitfires etc during the war without this important military base? ( I wasn't old enough to be about then, but have been to the museums and watched documentaries and stuff).

That's a bit like saying we should have kept slavery because we'd had it since the year dot.

Nobody's saying Manston didn't serve us well against Fritz and the Russkies, but that's not an argument for keeping it now. Its purpose disappeared a long time ago, let's move on.
