Concrete Evidence

Hearty congratulations to all of you who jumped on my latest 7 day poll asking whether you'd prefer a council with a larger set of cajones when it comes to fronting out developers who develop out the Ile's front, back and sides. A whopping 53 people cast their votes, here's the final tally:

Question: What's the way forward for Fannit?

Developers? No thanks!: 13% (7 votes)
Concrete is my friend!: 9% (5 votes)
More discretion by a stronger council: 77% (41 votes)

An overwhelming majority in favour of our beloved council showing more red cards and fewer green lights. Not that I expect them to take much notice. It seems you only have to give them a bag of toffees these days and they'll re-designate your agricultural land for industrial use before you can say 'JOBS!'.

TDC Cabinet is being given a presentation on Thursday on 'how to shift the local plan to get more land for CGP to build on' or something like that.

This is an attempt to start the process of getting the land earmarked for Phases 2 and 3 re-classified as development land not agricultural land.

Mind you, the Secretary of State for the Environment might have something to say about that.

Among the latest planning applications to be adveritsed in public notices in Thanet extra is one to change use of farmland at the other end of Manston - near Newington - into a nine hole pitch and putt golf course. Sounds like an extension to the existing one there. Why do they need to do this anyway - are we suddenly being swamped by would be golfers? In a lesser sense than CGP, it is another example of farmland being lost to create a few more jobs!
Or a cash strapped farmer realising the bottom has fallen out his particular market?

1.15, Agricultural land values going up and up and good prices for produce now. Have you thought that 500+ Chinese 'key-workers' and families will not only need housing (watch out for ECO Homes being put up amongst the 700 proposed for Eurokent) but that recreation will be needed as well.? Go and sit in on tomorrows Cabinet meeting at TDC (it is open to the public) and watch Mowice and Woger explain that because EKO LLP ( their own property Compnay with KCC) can be allowed to put 700 houses on Eurokent, TDC will need development land. Hey, presto! Ken Wills' and CGP's speculative purchase of farmland at Manston in early 2007 doesn't appear to have been speculative at all. Their 'mates' at TDC said they would fix it for them and now we will see it fixed! What ? Did I hear someone say, what about our Councillors and don't they have a say?

The full council meeting on October 9th will be really interesting especially since the Leader and Deputy can't take part. What chance the other councillors doing the honourable thing and throwing the application back, saying bring the whole scheme to us as we know you will push and push to get the land re-classified? Then the Secretary of State gets involved and the delay goes on and on until....

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender!

All very depressing as no-one seems to have the clout to stop them - Thanet would be a good place if it werent for the council is all we ever hear.
Just seem to change policies to suit them and their cronies.
Why oh why not use Eurokent for ind units then we wont have to go further out into the countryside.
Complete disgrace the purchase of the M and S building and no-one seems to be accountable.
The leaders appear unassailable and no-one to stand up to them. Our mp and now the chamber of commerce backing CGP, the latter are meant to be appolitical. Everyone falls for the vague notion of jobs, doesnt matter if they ruin the countryside for a few notional jobs

Have just received a card through the post from TDC informing me that I have been "randomly selected" to complete a survey abot our local area and to tell TDC what I think about the way they do things! Survey to follow shortly. Seems a waste to me to send two communicdations when one would have been a lot cheaper - after all its our community charge money they're spending. But I can't wait to fill it in. Has anyone else had one?

Think you lot not need to pack your bags and leave. You seem to be terminally depressed, and don't know a good thing when you have it. You clearly have never lived anywhere else, have never experienced what a really bad council is like, or ever even really had a life.

And to top it all, at a time of huge uncertainty right across the world, you try and knock back a scheme that could give a few of the good things in life to people who have never had much.

What a tired, sick and selfish bunch you are.

Bugger off!

I'll agree with you 9:25 PM. I grew up in Thanet, left in my early 20s, returned in my early 40s. Before I left a friend of mine had slated, to my then objection, the apathy of Thanetians, an island race within an island race. Once I saw what life was more about I had to agree, he was right. There is a lot of Thanet not built on or ever will be and despite someone on here a while back going on about what will happen if and when sea defences are breached at Birchington, even if they are there will still be thousands of acres dry and still not developed now or ever.

Oh by the way, if anyone thinks I'm Gerry O'Donnell.....I'm not, sorry!

Gerry, not the GOD,you are spouting utter ignorance. Go and look at an OS Map of Thanet and shade in the development being constructed and proposed and then shade in the land flooded if sea defences are allowed to fail and you will see that my grandchildren will be living on an Isle covered in concrete surrounded by sea or salt marshes. This Isle is one of the most densely populated areas of the UK outside major cities and there are not thousands of acres of agricultural land left here; look at a map and please desist from spouting rubbish.

A response is required for "never had it so good" and there is a lot of open spaces person.

Its very clear that these two people do not do their own research whatsoever. These two did not watch the other nights inside out programme about the rising of the seas.

I would suggest that these two look at the issue of no flood defences at Pegwell Bay which will lead to eventual flooding of the low lying Thanet area.

Two major employees (less the farmers g-d bless them) have buildings on these, Pfizer's and Southern Water. The later gives cause for alarm if it gets flooded as Canterbury will receive Thanets S**T.

And in 50 years time we will have been invaded by visitors from outer space, or all be dead from a yet to be discovered virus.

25% of Thanet children do not have a working parent. Live in the real world of now, or go and live somewhere else where you won't have to worry about sea floodwaters.

Can you people not see that Thanet is dying? It desperately needs an ecomonic boost yet we have people like you trying to prevent this happening!! I bet 90% of you were not even born in Thanet and sold your house in London to retire here. Do you seriously think that you can compare Thanet to Brighton and believe Thanet can once again attract the level of tourism to support the local economy? You need to wake up and smell the coffee!!

When was the last time you drove along Northdown Road or Margate High Street? You should take a drive down there and see for your own eyes the visible decay instead of relying on Waitrose's home delivery service.

Take a look on the Internet at the amount of posts from people who have visited Thanet to rekindle childhood memories of family holidays and how dumbstruck they are at the change. Look at the Lido in Cliftonville, the difference from it's heydays of the 50's, 60's and 70's. The only way that Thanet could heal itself through tourism would be to become a Blackpool of the South or gambling centre through the establishment of casinos. I think this would be great for Thanet and breathe fresh life into this terminally ill locality and I am sure I am not alone.

If you continue to hold Thanet back you will find that one day you will have to visit the local Waitrose yourself as there will be no deliver drivers available. Can you face up to the prospect of doing your own gardening? Perhaps you relish the thought of your tranquil village hidden from the rest of England by a cabbage field forest as there will be no labour to harvest the cabbages that surround your hamlet. Cabbage Island, as it is known to many, has to adapt or die whether you accept this or not.
