Reader Barry has sent me this snap of our clapped out Royal Pavilion here in the Millionaires' Playground getting a bit of an old facelift.
If you recall, Rank hopped it with their G Casino to Westwood Angry two years ago, leaving the Pav in a parlous state. Quite why the Cecil Square junta hadn't enforced the repairing terms of their lease over the previous 40 years, lord knows. Still, I suppose it deserves a half-hearted cheer to see they're at last doing it now.
According to the press release from our beloved Duffers, the work will include 'redecoration and work to the roof' which will 'be the start of a process that will eventually lead to further regeneration of the seafront and reoccupation of the building.' I see Rank have also applied for listed building consent to remove three metal screens from the first floor roof deck.
I guess we must be grateful that the place hasn't been Goddenised before now. It would be nice to think someone will come along with lots of dosh and an imaginative plan for the place - anyone for a swimming pool with glass walls? You'd be able to splash about on Ramsgate Sands in the middle of winter! It would have to be better than the monstrous lump that looks like an airport ramp which is being planned for the slipways!

ice rink? ice rink? ice rink?just the right size
Hell will freeze over first before TDC did anything con-structive...con being the real word as TDC is nothing more than a public con - or should that be a pubic con?
Gracious me, 1:06AM is Alice in Wonderland with a speech impediment?
Well done 8:40AM, it's constructive suggestions like that, that put everything to rights.
does the heras fencing circling it mean the toothless, tatooed, tanned, special brew swigging, jobless pitbull tuggers who ruin your arrival at Ramsgate Main Sands have now been moved on?
It should house the Thanet equivalent of the Medway's Dickens' World except showing what the area was like in the 50s before arson became popular and there were some decent attractions.I already have a name-Lost
Anyone knows why the helicopter was waking us up at 02:00 this morning.
Lucy agreed...however I do hope that the current owners take the front entrance away its hideous, perhaps that is what 08:40 alluded to?
Alice
if you do something on the seafront, I think it should be something that takes advantage of the spectacular views rather than a closed shed that could be in an industrial estate or Westwood Cross.
In the "olden days" they seemed to have the right idea and put magnificent swimming pools on the seafront. A return of the old Lido would be a great idea. A heated pool so you can swim all year round.
Large Wetherspoon????
Wetherspoons have already picked up the Kent International Hotel.
I think the structure should be converted into a maritime museum. However, I don't mean polished linoleum, a hushed atmosphere and a few dusty, uninteresting artifacts. I mean a museum with some interactive features to keep youngsters engaged (e.g. can you stand on the deck of a trawler in a Force 10 gale? Can you climb the rigging to furl the sails? Have your picture taken as a Smack Boy). The museum could draw on Ramsgate's rich heritage as a port and the nearby Goodwin sands as the graveyard of many good men. Ramsgate needs a visitor attraction and this could draw far more people than the Turnip Centre.
That last suggestion for a state-of-the-art maritime museum and activity centre is great!!
A scaffold just what we need for the current ruling party and cohort of lick spittle directors. They made the decision to close the maritime museum down 5 years ago but did not have the metal to do it properly.shame on you cllrs Roberts & Latchford both former serving officers for HM and u hide behind the apron strings of a housing officer from sevenoaks to all in the know our current ch.exec who has cost the local ratepayers millions during his pitiful time in charge.

I suspect, Anon 4.32, that "hav[ing] your picture taken as a Smack Boy" would constitute an offence nowadays.

I take it you are on about out the oxymoron...or is that a moron-oxy?
knock it down. a bit of victorian vandalism that ruins the view as you walk to the beach from harbour parade.
No museums please, I want to live in the future not the past.
It's going to be a casino.
Demolish the hideous bloody thing.
Why couldn't it be used as a large aquarium or a small Sealife center?
No doubt Mr Godden, Thorley and Ezekiel will adopt some sharks in the marina park...
i agree ice rink no more train to gillingham for skating trip
What is this obsession with ice rinks? Round and round in the freezing cold, risking broken ankles. No thanks. I'd rather do my washing.
Prepare youselves quess the scaffolding will be there for years! The Harbour area looks so run down, closed Museum, etc etc. Tourism in is on the up in UK due to people cutting back,Tdc seem to be off the trend...
12.09 get on with your washing then tdc wont let it happen it would take away from m/gate turnip w/elephant
how bout a German style beerodrome with a year round beer festival.
a toby carvery?
The lack of truly innovative ideas exposed within these comments leads one to the conclusion that writers would be no better, if elected to the TDC, than the present bunch.
10.26 would you be any better
what ever its use parking will be its downfall
It'll be the same old story. Derelict for a decade. Burnt down. Eyesore for a decade. Car park for another decade. Then sold off so someone can build 'luxury flats'.
why wait pull it down build the appartmets now
This is a wonderful opinion. The things mentioned are unanimous and needs to be appreciated by everyone.
Hire Scaffolding
9:51 PM, I very much doubt it but then I do not have any bright ideas. Left to me we would revert to the Coronation Ballroom, Merrie England, the Green and Brown Club and joining a queue to see Stan Kenton and his band. Guess it is time for my tablets again!
does ramsgate town council have any plans for the site or is it down to the margateites to decide ramsgate future yet again
I would have thought that in the first instance it's up to Rank to decide what they do with the site, given that their lease doesn't expire until the end of April 2044.
.
rank dont give a t--s they have moved on
Rank might not give a toss, to use a Thanetian colloquialism, but they must pay a bob or two in rent under their lease. Perhaps this explains their reason for the reburbishment with a view to attracting a buyer for their leasehold interest or even a sub tenant. Can't see a big company throwing money at it if they have simply 'moved on' as alleged.
cheaper for them to renovate and sub lease than pay full lease but sub lease to who for what????
A pool heated by solar energy is a good approach, considering our Marina Pool was stripped from us and soon to be yet another cash sum in the petty pockets of the folk that had it levelled.
As for our former Granville Marina esplanade concluding with the 'Establishment' - conservation eh? What is uncle Dermott paid for... inaudible drunk commentary at archive film events?
swimming pool, ice rink. roller skating, all non starters no parking area. but could use old disused site next to lift but this would be to simple for the duffers to consider it would up stage the almighty carbunckel the turnip
What do you mean?
any use will always have same problem PARKING
