Flightpath Of Fancy

Reader Helen from Surrey writes:

I spoke to (an estate) agent in Ramsgate this morning, with regard to a house in Wellington Crescent that we saw yesterday. She insisted that a) the Pleasurama site, aka Royal Sands, will not rise above the level of the cliff and b) there are 'only a couple of planes now and then' (she also said that Ramsgate was not on the flight path and then quickly retracted ). Do I believe her about the Royal Sands development? I certainly don't believe her about the planes. Do they think that we are all stupid? A couple of minutes research on the internet can uncover almost any potential nasties

Also there are no thugs, crime or loose dogs, women or apes and the grass is slightly greener. But there is a small leprechaun in the garden.

Also everyone tells the truth and the local council members do a realy spiffing job and never cheat or steal.

Honest guv'.

Well, now that the whole sorry affair of the training flights has been publicised by yours truly, she can!

But that's not all she had to say. Watch this space.

Is there anybody about that believe what an estate agent says?

That should be"council members do a really spiffing job and never lie or actually do anything"

I have a thick enough skin not to worry about being described in various derogatery terms by people but I draw the line at being accused of being a cheat and a thief.

or maybe "I have a thick enough skin unless someone is saying something in very general terms clearly not aimed at me personally but at my perceived group in an ironic tone at which I can take offense due to my completely self-important sense of honour".

I expect most councillors, most MPs and most Ministers are decent, honourable hard-working people, but after the last few weeks, I think you may need to thicken your skin quite considerably if something this vague gets through it...

Being clearly very naive, I am extremely excited at the prospect of seeing leprechauns in Ramsgate. We only get the odd fairy in Surrey.

I don't usually believe Estate Agents' fanciful rhetoric but I do like a straight answer to a straight question, particularly when it involves trying to make a big financial decision. Yes, call me old fashioned.....

Can Cllr Harrison give me any idea of the Council's plans for the airport and Ramsgate?

Is the town going to be dumbed down or smartened up? Is the airport destined to be another Heathrow? Are the local people going to have to carry on putting up with those ancient, deafeningly loud, low flying aircraft? I thought that Ramsgate was a great place until one flew overhead so low that I was torn between diving for cover and reaching up to shake hands with the pilot.

It seems that whatever is decided about the airport will shape the future of the town. It has the choice of being a beautiful, vibrant, exciting place to live or of being a noisy, shabby, industrialised dive like Hounslow. Hmmm ....difficult choice.

Ramsgate has had fantastic press coverage in recent years as a place to invest in and stands to benefit greatly from the future rail link. It seems curious that this investment money is being actively discouraged by allowing things like the training flights and the vast, ugly and unimaginative proposed Royal Sands development.

Has Ramsgate got a psychological problem? Is it into self-harm?

Or am I a whinging Surrey nuisance with an unfortunate penchant for Georgian and Regency architecture. Does Ramsgate want to keep people like me at bay?
Should I buy shares in a company that makes ear plugs and just grin and bear it? So many imponderables.

Bye for now!

At least you are a "whinging Surrey nuisance" who has actually been here! You'd be welcome to move here but I think shares in a certain fencing company might also prove quite lucrative - but most of us agree with you about the Royal Sands development - we wanted an all-weather public swimming pool!
