Putting The Fun In Funeral

OK, OK, I take it all back! Mrs/Lady/Baroness Thatcher was the best thing that ever happened to this country!!!

Not only was she an attractive, sexy woman, but she also single-handedly beat off hordes of filthy, revolting miners, the entire, unwashed Irish nation, the disgusting, money-grabbing union types and the loony socialist lefties who wanted us all to become part of the USSR, AND, let us not forget, THE ARGIES!!!!!!!!!

Of course, I was a mere twinkle in Mr Eastcliff Snr's eye for most of her reign. But having read up on her a bit, I now know she was the Iron Lady who put the 'Great' back in 'Great Britain' and bestowed upon us the fabulous wealth that we enjoy today.

Frankly a state funeral is nowhere near enough of a tribute to the woman. Nothing short of sainthood and an airport named after her would be sufficient to commemorate her magnificent achievements. In fact I have today started a petition to rename our very own RAF London Kent Manston Margate Tracey Emin Schipol International Airport as the RAF London Kent Manston Margate Tracey Emin Maggie Thatcher Schipol International Airport. You can't say fairer than that.

My volte face is, natch, nothing to do with the fact that I today received my invitation to what is being described as 'the funeral of the century', along with my other old showbiz chums Jeremy, Jeffrey, Dame Shirley, Sir Andy, Sir Terry, Sir Brucie, Sir Trevorie and Sir Davidie. Together we're planning to give her a good, old-fashioned, hoofing send-off. The rumour is I may even be called upon to render my tribute version of 'Candle In The Wind'. 'Twould be an honour, Ma'am!

A large portion of the population believes that Thatcher was not a great Prime Minister and that there is no reason to give her a State funeral in all but name. Who is representing the views of these people in parliament? This is just another example of politicians being out of touch and unrepresentative of public opinion.

Why is it that anonymous contributors so frequently claim that they speak for large proportions. What 6:38 means is that he belives Thatcher was not a great prime minister. Whilst I am sure his view is shared by others, there are also those that think she was good for the country. What is indisputable is that she was the first female PM.

From a personal view point, she did great harm to my family, but I am still capable of recognising her overall commitment to this country and that she actually achieved a great deal. From the polls it seems some 51% approval whilst only 31% against. Hardly out of touch with public opinion then, 6:38.

God help us said...

didnt labour shut more mines than Thatcher but hey ho dont let the truth spoil a good story. didnt we go to war in Iraq over WMD under Blair oh sorry they didnt exist :)

I don't agree with either side of the Thatcher argument.

She was steered to power by powerful men and she did not throw off their yoke.

She was ready to capitulate over Falklands and was persuaded to war by an Admiral with a grasp of only losers moan about the rules. But those who hate her seem to deny that this country had (and has) serious problems.

I doubt Thatcher prescribed the right medicine but that is a moot point as she prescribed it in overdose anyway.

Wait for the history books. (I'll be long since tumbled orf the twig by then)

If you get the chance ECR don't forget to introduce yourself to another well known Thanet person who was in her cabinet, namely one Jonathan Aitken. Maybe the son of Thatcher will also have a pow wow with him on how they both somehow made loads-of-money from arms dealings.

Remember 80% top rate income tax, the 3 day week, James "Crisis? What crisis?" Callaghan, garbage in Leicester Square, restrictive practices, 25% inflation, UK "the sick man of Europe", grossly inefficient nationalised industries, the demise of the car industry, ditto steel and shipbuilding, devaluation, huge loand from the IMF etc, etc.... That's what she fought against. Remember. Oh yes, and without her pivatisation/ liberalisation, we wouldn't have access to mobile phones in his country!

Oh that is just utter rubbish! The British have this masochistic love for a PM who gave you the most expensive AND inefficient semi-privatised public transport in Europe (I say semi because the losses are still borne by the public purse), who made sure that no investments were made into putting down fibreoptic cabling for telecommunications (because the state owned telecoms company had been sold off) thus putting Britain's preparedness for modern telecoms on par with Romania's and who decided to get rid of the manufacturing sector in favour of an over-reliance on the economic sector. Ultimately she is the reason our finances are in the shit state they are. The fact that Blair is the one who finalised her policies is neither here nor there. Also let us not forget that it was under Thatcher that we got the unemployment figures that landed generations of underprivileged families outside of the job market, and ultimately caused London boroughs to dump their human refuse in Thanet. Yeah you have every reason to celebrate Maggie. In fact she should have had a state funeral in 1979.

who would have thought that a satirical post could spark some much irrelevant venom from some commentators? Clearly there is an excess of it in some people's systems and it needs an egress of some kind. We must be grateful to ECR for providing this valuable public conduit!

Crumbs!

I'm quite partial myself to a spot of potty-mouthed vitriol, and I'm sure Anon 4:50/4:53am is a perfectly moderate fellow ordinarily. It just goes to show the effect that staying up all night can have on the powers of debate.

That reminds me, wasn't Mrs T famously insomniacal?!

I think there are strong similarities between Anon of 4.53 and Mohamed Al Fayed. Some of the same language. Could it be...? No, surely not.
