15 Facts You Already Knew About Manston

Only in your super, soaraway Eastcliff Richard! We profile the airport that's just been sold for a whopping £1!!! (Shurely shome mishtake? - Ed.)

1. RAF London Kent Manston Margate Tracey Emin Chas & Dave Maggie Thatcher Schipol Poundland International Airport began life in 1915 as an emergency landing strip for the Royal Flying Corps.

2. Contrary to popular belief, RAFLKMMTEC&DMTSPIA does not have 'the longest runway in the UK'. It is, in fact, the 14th longest runway in the country.

3. Also contrary to urban legend, and contrary to what it says on the airport's Wikipedia page, NASA never had any plans to use the airport as an emergency landing strip for the space shuttle.

4. When the previous owners, Kiwi firm Infratil, took over in 2006 after the airport went bust, they predicted it would be breaking even by 2009.

5. In 2007, the airport was said to require millions of pounds worth of investment to sort out its drainage and fuel tanks.

6. Also in 2007, a poll conducted by Eastcliff Richard revealed that 73% of readers found training flights from RAFLKMMTEC&DMTSPIA a nuisance.

7. In 2008, 1500kgs of rotting food was impounded off a cargo flight, including 'fish that was so badly decayed some of it had become liquid'.

8. Also in 2008, Manston based holiday firm Seguro went bust, leaving 2,500 holidaymakers stranded abroad.

9. In 2009, Thanet North MP Sir Roger Gale pushed for Manston to become 'London's Olympic Airport'.

10. Also in 2009, Infratil reported the airport was losing £4m a year, and were expected to sell it 'within 12 months'.

11. And again in 2009, British Airways World Cargo pulled out of negotiations to base themselves at Manston, preferring Stansted instead.

12. In 2010, regular Manston cargo visitors Meridian and Egyptair were severely reprimanded by the DfT and CAA for serious technical and safety failures.

13. Cargo flights have often been found to conceal contraband. In 2010, 3kg of cocaine was seized off a knackered old jumbo from Ghana.

14. Also in 2010, the airport changed its name, yet again, this time from 'Kent International Airport' to 'Manston - Kent's International Airport.'

15. During the last general election, Thanet North MP Sir Roger Gale came out firmly against night flights at Manston.

That's enough Manston facts - Ed.

Richard, you missed out the August 11th 2010 incident where an Afghan DC8 took off 11.5 tonnes overweight and demolished a landing light and left a 30mtr trench in the grass as it scraped itself off the ground (just).

Anonymous said...

You also missed that it is still there, that civilian operators have used it since 1959 and 150 people depend on it for their livelihood, not including contractors and offshoot firms that only exist because the airport is there.

Where has this spurious figure of 150 jobs suddenly come from?

Anonymous said...

And the unbranded training flight over Ramsgate today has been a pain in the arse.

Anonymous said...

Unbranded? no requirement to be coloured, it has a clear registration showing.
150 jobs was quoted at the last KIACC meeting.

Don Wood said...

Dickie still a member of the Manston Airport supporters club I see. Manston has a checkered past and will never be helped by yourself running it down at every turn. It makes a good enough job with out you slagging it at all opportunities. I am sure your Millionaire mates will be flying out from Manston to the Costas this summer and telling you they drove down in the Jag. In the mean time all your moaning is putting the 150 jobs at risk. Maybe you could employ them in your Maison on the Clifftop.

Failing businesses close down every day. They deserve to. Get them out of the way to make room for businesses that want to grow and have a realistic chance of doing so.

How much public time and energy and Faldo hope and promises has Manston taken up over the past 20 years?

Shut it down Ann. Even with healthy redundancy payments for all, your purchase would still leave you with land worth more as cabbage fields than you invested.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure Faldo couldn't give a shite. I meant false

Richard Eastcliff said...

Easy for you to say, Don, when they're not flying over your house!

Besides, all I've done is list some key facts about the airport, dating back to 2006. If you're saying that's 'moaning', then perhaps you would like to make up some alternative, fantasy facts that are more in tune with your rosy-tinted view of the airport and put them on your blog!

Talking of 'facts', I also doubt this figure of 150 jobs which is now being touted as gospel, 3:29pm. If it came from KIACC, it must be iffy!

Anonymous said...

Face it Don, you and your pro-airport mates are utterly discredited. You all thought it was a great idea to have an airport at Manston and you all justified it because of the thousands of jobs which you said it would generate. It has never produced any significant number of jobs.

Meanwhile the opportunity to regenerate Thanet by creating a massive enterprise zone has been squandered. How much longer are you prepared to see the airport limping along before you concede that your backing for it is irrational and misplaced, and that your dogmatic views have damaged Thanet's economy? Are we doomed to live our entire lives in the shadow of this failure, simply because nobody in a position of authority had the brains or guts to say, "Let's try something different."

Anonymous said...

There would be a lot more jobs if it was put to good use. I am sure there are people in Thanet (and one in Scotland) that are full of good employment making ideas.

Brenda Stuka said...

Many moons ago, when I flew for the Führer, I noticed how the landing lights traced out a large cock and balls pointing at France. How standards have slipped, and the only way to retrace our steps to those heady days is voting for UKIP surely?

Discovery Park on our doorsteps is an example of what can be achieved in a short space of time and it has no better transport links than Manston.

It does of course have a very experienced management team and Enterprise Zone status. Maybe they could transform Manston. They could make a start by taking over the EKO LLP partnership between KCC and TDC.

Peter C said...

Quick, someone start a petition!!!

Anonymous said...

Manston already has stacks of unused business park land available. To attract investors you need skills and they are just not there in abundance in Thanet.

All this stuff is about anything other than an airfield. Why lets have a giant theme park or maybe a nuclear power station.

Anonymous said...

Discovery Park .... puleeease." They've failed miserably and have ended up agreeing to turn it into a giant shopping mall. How can you class this as a success?

You don't need "business park land." That is available in buckets all over the country. What you need is a reason for quality companies to relocate to Thanet. You need a redevelopment fund and you need to use it to provide companies with the facilities they need. However, to do this effectively, you have to use people who know about business and can tell the difference between a genuine business and a shower of sh*te.

Above all, you need to convince them that their staff, who move to the area aren't going to invest in seaside property only to find it blighted by night flights. For that matter, you need to assure them that the place isn't run by raving lunatics.

1 o'clock Rob said...

@ Anon 5:17pm who states "Failing businesses close down every day. They deserve to. Get them out of the way to make room for businesses that want to grow and have a realistic chance of doing so. "

Unless of course it's a bank right? your view fails miserably given the fact that most UK banks are now owned by the public and if you had your way they would have been allowed to collapse and take a large chunk of the UK economy with it.

Anonymous said...

7:50 the place is run by raving lunatics.

Only lunatic(s) would build an airport on the water supply and then argue to keep it open wouldn't they?

Clive and Bob and Sue'll sort it out eventually.

Anonymous said...

Fact 16: there is no pollution at Manston apparently.

Anonymous said...

Offtopic but this is very interesting in KCC share ownership (with our taxes) of fracking companies etc.

Who approved these investments?

http://kentgreenparty.blogspot.com/2013/10/exposed-kccs-153m-investment-in-fracking.html

Anonymous said...

8:21, losing the Manston argument so jump on Driver's fracking bandwagon. What next with you lot or do you want us back to pre-industrial revolution days. No planes, no fuel, 20 years off life expectancy and workhouses

Anonymous said...

Back to the topic. Ann Gloag and her brother Brian Souter are clearly very astute business people. So one has to wonder why, if they are interested in running an airport, they have purchased one that loses £4m a year, 100s of miles away from their base, when they could have had Prestwick and saved it for their fellow Scots. At least Prestwick has half a chance of being a going concern.

The answer must be that they don't want an airport, they want a huge lump of land in the South East of England.

Anonymous said...

So 10;20, you know that for a fact do you. Think about it for a moment, if you can drag your mind above your own selfish interests. If you want an airport, one located just 25 miles from the continent has to offer better potential than one located in the frozen north. Shorter journey times, savings on fuel and closer to an area of considerable affluence, the richest part of UK.

Yet again you flounder in your desperation, but why are you so worried? As you are convinced Manston is going to fail as an airport, you really have nothing to worry about. Relax, wait for it to happen and then you can tell us all how right you were.

Anonymous said...

You really do have to laugh at some people. "Prestwick has half a chance of being successful." Prestwick is losing money, it is up for sale and the Scottish Parliament are negotiating to take it into public ownership. It is a poor relation to Glasgow International.

Poor old, 10:20, in his desperation to stop planes flying over his house he will be telling us next that the Gloags would have been better off buying Lydd or maybe they could re-activate Hawkinge.

Anonymous said...

A Parkway rail station indeed.

Next they'll be building houses at Pfizer instead of developing pharma jobs!

KCC is just the civil service arm of the construction industry.

Anonymous said...

9:44 Thanet is pre-Industrial isn't it? Low life expectancy, no jobs, no planes, empty houses, food banks and corrupt and lazy government?

It used to have a booming tourist industry like many seaside towns still do.

Anonymous said...

Clearly there are some feeble business brains on here. Of course Ann Gloag couldn't give a flying fig about running Manston as an airport. It has already proved itself to be a commercial disaster.

What she has got, however, is some prime land to build on for £1.

The first sentence of the 'in-depth' analysis in today's Gazette pretty much sums up the pitiful state of local thinking about Manston: "Demand for small, regional airports and a runway large enough for Concorde to land should help Manston airport to continue to operate despite its sale for £1, says an industry expert."

Which industry expert was that then? Pissed Ron down the local? I haven't stopped laughing since I read it.

Anonymous said...

All around the UK coast there are struggling towns which were once busy seaside resorts before the British discovered Benidorm and cheap package holidays. Despite that, 9:44, in his sad desperation, reckons that many seaside resorts still have flourishing tourist industries. Ha bloody ha! Tourism can be part of an economy at the coast but not the whole.

12:22 then goes on to dismiss all those who suggest there may be a future for Manston as having feeble business brains although he does not disclose his own expertise.

The Gazette, calling on the expertise of someone in the industry, suggests the airport could have a future whereas Richard Eastcliff, Tim Garbutt and Ian Driver reckon it is finished. Since those three are hardly experts in any field, my money is on the Gazette report.

Anonymous said...

12:22, laugh while you can for more planes are coming. You fool no one but yourself, Garbled.

Anonymous said...

Actually, what the Gazette have done is spoken to a press officer from the CAA, who has pretty much read them quotes from Wikipedia. Which means said expert is about as informed as all the other swivel-eyed micro-brains commenting in favour of the airport on this blog.

If you want to put your money on the Gazette report, go ahead. A pound isn't a bad punt if you ask me, or Ann Gloag for that matter. Oh but wait, she'll get her investment back 100 million fold when she builds on the airport, whereas you'll have lost your quid.

Don Wood said...

Dickie was there not an airport there before you moved into your Mansion or did you fail to spot the big flat space with airplanes on it before you moved there. You cant say that you were not expecting them to be noisy. That is like moving next to a sewage farm and moaning about the smell. All I am doing is saying the people in Thanet who do the most moaning have little to moan about. Everything from The TC to WX has been moaned about. It is a Thanet pastime.

Anonymous said...

Concorde landing at Manston? Who is flying it? Lord Lucan? Idiocy.

Seaside towns don't do tourism? Tell that to Bournemouth, Torquay, Scarborough, Rhyl, and just about anywhere in Cornwall. Even Whitstable. Idiocy.

A one quid sale of Manston is great news for the airport's future? Idiocy.

Manston can be built on over the water supply? Idiocy.

Anonymous said...

Dear old Roger Break Wind has changed his stance on night flights depending on which political party has been in power at TDC. Political chicanery rather than principles guide his decision-making. I do wish whichever planet the old fart js on mentally would take him lock, stock and barrel.

Richard Eastcliff said...

Funnily enough, Don, it wasn't an airport when I moved into my cliff top mansion, because Planestation had just gone bust, and Infartil were yet to move in!

But of course, my wolf pack of highly trained lawyers did alert me to the big, flat, useless lump of concrete up the road.

To be honest, I don't know why people say I'm against Manston. It's true that I don't like the training flights coming over every nine minutes, and I'm against knackered and dangerous old cargo crates grinding over my roof, especially when I'm trying to get some much-needed shut-eye.

But if there were some decent passenger flights, that would whisk me off to the exotic destinations where my holiday homes are, I'd be all for the place!

In the absence of that, I will continue to moan. Or, as I prefer to put it, present the facts. The airport is not commercially viable, it never has been, and will continue to blight Thanet and suck on the taxpayer's tit as long as people like you continue to refuse to live in the real world.

Anonymous said...

Oh dear. The economically illiterate loonies are out in force claiming that Manston has a future. Perhaps one of the loonies could help me out with something. If Manston hasn't made any money in the last 20 years, and successive owners have struggled to persuade any airlines to use the airport, what exactly could Ann Gloag (who has no background in running airports) do to turn things around? Despite the positive press, she isn't Wonderwoman and she can't move the airport 50 miles closer to London, which is the only way it would attract any significant volumes of traffic.

Anonymous said...

4:55, the whole point of provincial airports is that they are not close to London. Move it 55 miles closer and it would be Biggin Hill.

Manston has not been an independent airport for twenty years so your figures are crap as ever. From 1959 until the RAF moved out it operated successfully.

Whether Ann Gloag can turn it round or what plans she has you know no better than anyone else so, as ever, you are expressing your own wishes, no more or less.

Anonymous said...

Excuse me asking, 4.55, but what exactly are your qualifications in economics and what expertise do you have in running airports?

All you are doing is giving your opinion as are others. Just because some disagree with you does not make them economic illiterates and, by resorting to such insults, you destroy your own case.

Unknown said...

I've also heard that a large supermarket chain is looking to open shop on part of the Pfizer site. No doubt creating hundreds of jobs in the process.

I doubt this was what was intended by making it an enterprise zone - replacing highly paid pharma jobs with low paid, part-time supermarket jobs.

Anonymous said...

Spot on, Joe, along with proposals for housing. Again not part of the plan and, although people need somewhere to live, they also need jobs to pay the rent or mortgage.

So much for all this rhubarb about making Manston a business park. When you cannot attract investors into an existing park with enterprise zone status and tax perks, what chance of doing so at a less developed site just eight miles away.

Anonymous said...

What a disaster the Discovery Park has been. Launched 14 months ago and its only attracted 50 new businesses who employ 1300 direct staff between them.
Not something we would like to see at Manston with promise of 3000 staff at the airport. Even Southend Airport with its 80 flights a day has only managed 300 new staff in 18 months. But I guess that is the key to running budget airlines, you get the passengers numbers up and get them some of the work and keep staff numbers down.

Anonymous said...

You still miss the point, 6:27, for there is still stacks of space left at Discovery Park. If there are no takers for that just who do you think would come to Manston?

By the way, didn't they have to lose 6,000 Pfizer jobs in order to create half that number in the enterprise zone? All very enterprising, I'm sure.

Anonymous said...

Blimey, I asked for one loonie to reply to me and several poked their heads over the parapets. However, not one of them could offer a single suggestion as to what dramatic change Ann Gloag could make to turn around Manston's fortunes. Much as I expected really. They haven't got a clue.

Anonymous said...

"What a disaster the Discovery Park has been. Launched 14 months ago and its only attracted 50 new businesses who employ 1300 direct staff between them."

Typical misrepresentation of the real situation. Most of the companies "attracted to the site" have relocated there from other offices in East Kent. So, these aren't new jobs at all. It's a bit like the time when Cummins was relocated from Ramsgate Road to Manston Business Park, and TDC claimed that 600 new jobs had been created.

Peter C said...

I certainly don't have a clue, but I suspect that Ann Gloag does!

In the year 2013, the Lord came unto Noah,
who was now living in Thanet and said,
"once again, the earth has become wicked and over-populated,
and I see the end of all flesh before me.
Build another ark and save 2 of every living thing
along with a few good humans."
He gave Noah the blueprints, saying,
"you have 6 months to build the ark before I will
start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights."
Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah
weeping in his yard-but no ark.
"Noah!," He roared, "I'm about to start the rain!
Where is the ark?"
"Forgive me, Lord," begged Noah, "but things have changed."
"I needed a Building Permit."
"I've been arguing with the boat inspector
about the need for a sprinkler system."

"My neighbours claim that I've violated the
by-laws by building the ark in my
back garden and exceeding the height limitations. We had to
go to the Planning Committee for a variance."
"Then the local council and the Electric Company
demanded a shed load of money for the future
costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions,
to clear the passage for the ark's move to the sea. I told them
that the sea would be coming to us, but they would
hear nothing of it."
"Getting the wood was another problem. There's a ban
on cutting local trees in order to save the Greater Spotted Barn Owl.
I tried to convince the environmentalists that I
needed the wood to save the owls - but no go!"
"When I started gathering the animals the RSPCA took me to court.
They insisted that I was
confining wild animals against their will. They
argued the accommodations were too restrictive, and
it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in
a confined space."
"Then KCC ruled that I couldn't build the Ark until
they'd conducted an environmental impact study on your proposed flood."
"Immigration is checking the
Visa status of most of the people who want to work."
"To make matters worse, the Inland Revenue seized all my assets,
claiming I'm trying to leave the country,
illegally, with endangered species."
"So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at
least 10 Years for me to finish this Ark."
"Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine,
and a rainbow stretched across the sky."
Noah looked up in wonder and asked,
"you mean you're not going to destroy the world?"
"No," said the Lord. "The British Government seem to have beaten me to it."

Scraping the barrel again 9:08 for the Deal report dates back to April 2009 and then was more of an employment issue, involving a tribunal, than a criminal prosecution. Much as resigning deputy mayors may excite your tiny mind, it is not cause for massive arrests.

Anonymous said...

Unknown said...

I cannot wait and the excitement is all consuming.

Anonymous said...

"Surely it's in a prime position to succeed?"

Err no it isn't. Whenever professionals have been asked to assess the market for Manston they have commented on its unfavourable location (too far from London and the population it would need to serve, and surrounded on three sides by water), So, it has proved to be. It has lost money year on year and is considered such a bad investment that Infratil had to give it away.

I remember when the pro-airport loonies lost their money buying Wiggins shares, because they believed that Manston was bound to succeed. From the comments I've seen, Ann Gloag could make her £1 back many times over by calling, once again on the services of the pro-airport loonies to plough their savings into what is still a lost cause.

Anonymous said...

I thought you'd be in the pub by now Steve.

Many anti-aiport 'loonies' to borrow a term from Steve, have died of old age waiting for Manston to close, some expedited in their demise by their rage at successive owners still coming forward to take on the 'dead duck.'

Some, like Tim, have even lost their marbles over the years in their paranoia over aircraft.

A: Yes

Q: Did it succeed?

A: No

Q: Have the pro-airport loonies got any credibility?

A: No

Q: Is there any good reason to suppose that Manston will succeed this time around?

A: No

Q: Would you back it with your own money?

A: This is a difficult one and depends on who you are. If you are a airport sceptic it's quite simple. You wouldn't touch it with a barge-pole. However, if you're a pro-airport loonie it's more complicated. Although they claim that the airport is bound to succeed they wouldn't dream of putting their own money behind it. They are quite happy to see squillions of pounds of public money wasted on it because most of them don't work and don't pay taxes anyway. So, curiously, the answer is that nobody would back it with their own money. That's why Infratil could only get £1 for it.

I'm sure that Higgins is still commentating; certainly he's still reading as he made his blog private as soon as I mentioned his name a few days ago (I heard a whisper that his current employer doesn't approve of his campaigning, hence the anonymity now!).

Just two anti-Manston fanatics? Yet the public consultations are always full of people against Manston? Whether it's night flights or offroute jets or missing fines and monitors or pollution or cancer.

Even Infratil aren't so keen on it.

Why did KCC and TDC endanger the public to allow Manston to develop as it has done?

A Police inquiry is needed with details of the flights and pollution and fines and more councillors and civil servants and Infratil in jail.

Until more than two people actually reveal their identities I'll carry on assuming it's only two, ok?

How's the petition(s) coming along?

Checksfield having a conversation with himself.. again. I guess it must be difficult when nobody else wants to talk to you.

You mean you're accusing me of the aniti-Manston comments as well? You've obviously started on the booze early today!

Where is Thanet's "Diversity Champion" in all this? You know, the one who campaigns for diversity in all, as long as they're homosexuals?

I am on my second bottle of whisky today Peter and still your comments seem incoherent.

You are saying Manston is a success? That night flights were not completely rejected? That there is no pollution?
