Richard, you missed out the August 11th 2010 incident where an Afghan DC8 took off 11.5 tonnes overweight and demolished a landing light and left a 30mtr trench in the grass as it scraped itself off the ground (just).
You also missed that it is still there, that civilian operators have used it since 1959 and 150 people depend on it for their livelihood, not including contractors and offshoot firms that only exist because the airport is there.

Meanwhile the opportunity to regenerate Thanet by creating a massive enterprise zone has been squandered. How much longer are you prepared to see the airport limping along before you concede that your backing for it is irrational and misplaced, and that your dogmatic views have damaged Thanet's economy? Many moons ago, when I flew for the Führer, I noticed how the landing lights traced out a large cock and balls pointing at France. How standards have slipped, and the only way to retrace our steps to those heady days is voting for UKIP surely?
Discovery Park on our doorsteps is an example of what can be achieved in a short space of time and it has no better transport links than Manston.
It does of course have a very experienced management team and Enterprise Zone status. Maybe they could transform Manston. They could make a start by taking over the EKO LLP partnership between KCC and TDC.
Manston already has stacks of unused business park land available. To attract investors you need skills and they are just not there in abundance in Thanet.
All this stuff is about anything other than an airfield. Why lets have a giant theme park or maybe a nuclear power station.
Discovery Park .... puleeease." They've failed miserably and have ended up agreeing to turn it into a giant shopping mall. How can you class this as a success?
You don't need "business park land." That is available in buckets all over the country. What you need is a reason for quality companies to relocate to Thanet. You need a redevelopment fund and you need to use it to provide companies with the facilities they need. However, to do this effectively, you have to use people who know about business and can tell the difference between a genuine business and a shower of sh*te.
Above all, you need to convince them that their staff, who move to the area aren't going to invest in seaside property only to find it blighted by night flights. For that matter, you need to assure them that the place isn't run by raving lunatics.

Back to the topic. Ann Gloag and her brother Brian Souter are clearly very astute business people. So one has to wonder why, if they are interested in running an airport, they have purchased one that loses £4m a year, 100s of miles away from their base, when they could have had Prestwick and saved it for their fellow Scots. At least Prestwick has half a chance of being a going concern.
The answer must be that they don't want an airport, they want a huge lump of land in the South East of England.

If you want an airport, one located just 25 miles from the continent has to offer better potential than one located in the frozen north. Typical misrepresentation of the real situation. Most of the companies "attracted to the site" have relocated there from other offices in East Kent. So, these aren't new jobs at all. It's a bit like the time when Cummins was relocated from Ramsgate Road to Manston Business Park, and TDC claimed that 600 new jobs had been created.

Whenever professionals have been asked to assess the market for Manston they have commented on its unfavourable location (too far from London and the population it would need to serve, and surrounded on three sides by water), So, it has proved to be. It has lost money year on year and is considered such a bad investment that Infratil had to give it away.
I remember when the pro-airport loonies lost their money buying Wiggins shares, because they believed that Manston was bound to succeed. From the comments I've seen, Ann Gloag could make her £1 back many times over by calling, once again on the services of the pro-airport loonies to plough their savings into what is still a lost cause.
