Breaking News - There Is No News

Well, apart from a nice lady from Operation Cleansweep knocking on the door of the old cliff top mansion this morning. Fortunately the Eastcliff charm managed to steer her away from the 300 illegals I've got stashed in the attic. Most of them were out packing salads anyway.

Oh, and I seem to have come in for a bit of criticism for that last post about Stephen Hawking. Councillor Motormouth is 'not too impressed', and one of my sponsors has asked me to remove it. Do I care? And while I'm at it, Rebecca Adlington really does look like someone who's looking at herself in the back of a spoon, if you ask me.

Of course, there is some news around. The vile trade in live animal exports from Ramsgate has started again, and our 99p shop is infested with mice. But you can read all about that elsewhere.

So, while we're waiting for something to happen, I've been digging around in the ECR TV archives and found this little number I made for the Thanet Nudist Information Board way back in 2008. It extols the attractions of Broadstairs for naked bathers, and is quite suitable for this lovely weather we're having, methinks!

However, shrinking violets like Councillor M might want to look away at the end, as it contains a brief glimpse of a naked woman who looks a bit like a potato. Enjoy!

What about those High Speed trains that South East Trains would like to run to Ramsgate?
Just imagine all those extra passengers disembarking and heading for the Royals Sands and the Pavilion? Unless of course they just head off to Manston.

Not sure what it means for Ramsgate though. Can anyone explain?

The Jocks are upset about not being told about a 2012 nuclear leak at Dounreay.

Those nice west country folk are miffed about a serious nuclear incident 2012 at Devonport (Failure of backup generator power again)

According to Doreen Lawrence MSP the fault is with the racist MOD.

No news then.

Looks like SE want to fill the gap between Faversham and Margate and run trains all the way round the coast from St Pancras to Faverham to Herne Bay to Margate to St Pancras. There are two an hour to Faversham via Rochester so presumably they'd carry on and one would go through Ramsgate then via Dover to keep the Dealians happy, while the other would go through Ramsgate then via Canterbury as now.

The only obvious change would be two HS trains stopping in Ramsgate per hour and perhaps more'd all be 12 caoches long not six.

The other issue is if the service would have some recovery time built in somewhere because if not the chances of a delay in, say, the Medway towns, knocking on to Ramsgate to St Pancras goes up, and delays on HS1 are not a good idea.

It does save having trains sitting idle at Margate and Faversham for lenthy periods.

Is there no news on the Local Government Association investigation into TDC yet?

Or the next live animal exports/Port closure?

Anonymous said...

The LGA producing a report on TDC cant be worth the paper its written on. The LGA is a union for councillors and local authorities and as such cant be impartial. Lets see if the peer report quotes Cllr Driver.

Regarding 5.02pm this may sound like a throw-back to the 1960s but the hippies at the time were correct in that you’re trying to get the establishment to investigate the establishment, they will just go through the facade and come out with some no fault report. For example Grant Thornton giving TDC an unqualified “Value For Money conclusion” in their audit of the 2012-12 accounts despite the £3.4million ferry write-off http://thanet.gov.uk/media/570624/TDC_AuditFindings_report_Local_Government_2012-13_FINAL.pdf
And for example their report into that episode
http://democracy.thanet.gov.uk/documents/s35373/Annex%201.pdf

Anonymous said...

Worth remembering the LGA is funded by us through tax - TDC should cancel their subscription/membership?

Worrying that Grant Thornton think TDC is value for money - a company not to hire for accounting?

Why should the LGA etc though be so keen to whitewash TDC? Surely it's in their interest to remove failed councils? And we should elect councillors to replace the existing ones if they are part of a whitewash?

TDC and The Duffers are just not viable or credible any more.

Anonymous said...

Who should we write to at GT/LGA/TDC?

Anonymous said...

The LGA are not going to say that any paid TDC officer is not up to scratch and should be sacked, are they? They/TDC could face an employment tribunal. TDC have already done some pre-emptive work and rearranged the deck chairs on the Titanic (or was it the Oleander).

If you freeze the video at 23-24 and 27 seconds, how many boats!
You can see what a failure Thanet Council has made of running Broadstairs Harbour since.

Why would the LGA and Grant Thornton cover up this farce? They have no responsibility to TDC. And it makes them look bad in going along with this foolishness. Clive looked ridiculous denying the TDC audit report on corruption so much so they all resigned. None of this is acceptable especially as we are paying for it. Why have the councillors/civil servants not resigned and a vote of no confidence to spur them on?

Any old twit can keep wasting public funds, deny it and attempt to carry on with yet more public funds.

EKO with KCC and TDC in EKO suing KCC and TDC and each other is perhaps the best-ever idiocy from TDC. A clearout is needed: too expensive and too incompetent, and almost revelling in their idiocy and waste.

Anonymous said...

6.59 “why would Grant Thornton cover up this farce?” Firstly I am not sure they are wholly covering it up, rather playing it down, saying everything was acceptable, letting it go. As for reasons why, well one can but speculate so firstly insufficient changes of staff looking at TDC they are too close to TDC, secondly the level of fuss or criticism they make of TDC is directly proportional to the scale of their failure for not picking up on the issues over successive years as auditor so there is one big incentive there, thirdly there is the relevant saying that “he who pays the piper calls the tune” and they have future years of income to think about, fourthly an over-reliance on assertions by their customer TDC brought about by who knows, could be lack of funds or right staff to properly investigate, laziness, or being too close. None of these things are known.

Fair point on not picking up on the failure - and the Grant Thornton auditor is Andy Mack who was at the Audit Commission and did TDC audits. Certainly strange have him in effect checking his own homework.

Why would LGA cover it up? They are paid by TDC.

Anonymous said...

Another quiet news day in Thanet unless of course you know different.

Anonymous said...

The jumbo jet circling Ramsgate certainly isn't quiet. How long before we are rid of Manston and the noise and air pollution?

KLM after almost a year has been another failure and training flights and one or two cargo flights are pointless.

The recently announced noise consultation for the airport by DEFRA must be another nail in its coffin.

Anonymous said...

Don't suppose a Boeing 777 has landed at Manston without anybody noticing it?

Anonymous said...

Any old junk lands at Manston - and what happened with the 747 taking off at midnight last week?

The LGA Peer Review team for Thanet included:

Pete Rentell, Programme Manager – Local Government Support, LGA

Matt Nicholls, Head of News and Internal Comms, LGA

Cllr Helen Holland, Leader of the Labour Group, Bristol City Council

Cllr Terry Hone, Deputy Leader and Finance Portfolio Holder, North Herts District Council and Deputy Executive Member for Resources and Economic Wellbeing at Herts County Council

Andrew Muter, Chief Executive, Newark and Sherwood District Council

Graham Cook, Deputy Chief Executive, Reigate and Banstead Borough Council

Dickie WTF are all these comments about I started to read them and seems you have been attacked by commenting aliens.

Anonymous said...

Don there are 3 threads here. ECR commented that there is no news in Thanet and posters have pointed out that there was news, High Speed trains proposal to come to Ramsgate (and east Kent), the LGA peer report on TDC (which has now finished but not yet published), and noisy jumbos disturbing another quiet news day and a quiet day in Ramsgate.
Get it!

Why are KLM 'a failure'? Passenger numbers are still on the increase.. and no sign of them pulling out..
Training flights aren't pointless, they train pilots and bring in revenue to the airport.
I see that Saudia took out 3 x Rolls Royce's last week on one flight, that load worth £3/4m in itself, so the cargo flights are hardly pointless, people find them worthwhile doing.

Anonymous said...

Thanet's real failures are those that buy houses near the airport and then complain.

Anonymous said...

That would be the airport that has never had any planning permission would it?

Anonymous said...

You have 4 years to make planning objections then it is retrospective approval isnt it?

Anonymous said...

Of course KLM are a failure - where are the huge passenger numbers and inbound tourists? You say passenger numbers are increasing but no doubt KLM will pull the plug soon.

There are no more subsidies from KCC and TDC and EKO and Chinagate and Visit Kent.

Training flights? Revenue for the airport but a few hundred quid and lost revenue and pollution for the towns. And the risk of a training flight crash.

Saudi Cargo takes out 3 engines in cargo is that it? At midnight when the airport is closed?

Manston is a failure as are excuses such as this by Manston fanatics who can't explain the missing monitors and fines.

The LGA Review: More than 100 councillors, council staff and external stakeholders, which included community groups, private companies and partner organisations, took part in focus group sessions with the review team.

Sounds a lot unless it was mainly councillors: who were the groups etc?

Anonymous said...

The LGA is useless just councillors and civil servants investigating each other. And clinging on for another month's paycheck and pension. We know TDC are crooks we need a Police investigation and arrests and jail.

Anonymous said...

Rolls Royce cars, not engines, plus other cargo. I'm just saying it is worthwhile the freight companies running the route... and yes, it was closed, they all did it under the cover of darkness ...nobody was around to see what they were doing. I don't think so!

I bet you KLM don't pull the plug.. another charity bet? Are you game? They'll still be here at Christmas ..and long after ..

Anonymous said...

Rolls Royce cars is even worse Manston Fanatic: how many of those are likely to be airshipped each year?

What are you talking about closed etc? A 747 took off over Ramsgate at quarter past midnight. The airport closes at 11pm you confirmed it your self and were going to advise of the cargo?

Silly bets with you are irrelevant. KLM will pull the plug now a year is up, just as Infratil did, and Manston will close.

A bet on fields or houses for the airport would be interesting though, or arrests? $1 on Buchanan being nicked?

Anonymous said...

I bought a nearly out of date multi pack of twix for a pound from the £1 shop.

I think I got a better deal than Ann

Anonymous said...

Manston's even more out of date! I doubt Ann will get £1 in the next sale/closure.

A bit worrying out councillors have all scurried away from the problems. They all wanted a 24/7 cargo airport.

Anonymous said...

I never ever said it closed at 11, unless I did it sarcastically.. The airport closes after the last flight, that may well be after midnight on occasions. Ps, That gone midnight flight was an MD11, not a 747.
There were 4 747 freighters today :-)

And harping on about jailing Buchanan for 'corporate manslaughter' .. Who died?

Anonymous said...

No 9:48 you're making up the airpot regulations to suit yourself.

The airport closes at 11pm. Very occasionally late flights can arrive although that's even more unlikely now. Nowhere is an aircraft allowed to take off over the towns at midnight.

Who died? Where have you been? The cancer statistics are off the scale in Thanet - because Buchanan has allowed illegal flights as above. Take a look in the specialist cancer ward at the QEQM for a start.

What was the midnight cargo unless you're just a planespotter?

Anonymous said...

It does NOT close at 11 by default, hours of opening and closing are flexible to suit traffic, why are you so convinced it does? Last night it planned to close at 7 but stayed open later to accommodate a delay in the KLM and the Monarch that was crew training.
Have you proof any local cancer is directly attributed to Manston?
I'm no spotter, but I do know what flies in and out.. www.fr24.com will show you that in real time as you never venture up here yourself to see what really is going on. As for the loaded cargo, I don't know on that particular occasion.
There's no legal obligation to use either runway at any time, as has been said many times before.

Anonymous said...

Utter drivel 8:18. The airport operates 7am until 11pm. You're saying that because Infratil and GLoag breach that somehow those operating hours don't exist.

Of course it can close earlier and pay off the staff if it wants.

What proof would you like on cancer? Cancer around airports is well-recorded to increase - hence monitors being required. Or rather removed by Infratil and Gloag and TDC.

Similarly the rural end of the runway is also specified in the S106. You've had this explained to you on several occasions now.

This is just embarrassing fanaticism making excuses for pollution and the airport operating procedures.

You must be a planespotter -albeit on the computer - because you claim to know what the planes are but have no knowledge of the cargo.

Anonymous said...

This is all a bit irrelevant now the airport has closed, isn't it? I bet Tim wishes he'd taken that bet about KLM being there until Christmas!

Anonymous said...

It hasn't closed.
