Scobie-Dobie-Don't!

In the spirit of totally ignoring what our local flying doctor has revealed in the last 24 hours over on the seedy north side of the island, here's some more chucklesome Scobie snaps sent in by my readers. Keep 'em coming!

East Of The Wantsum

Here's this week's EotW - click it to big it. At this rate I think I can pretty well write off my invite to Cllr Baywatch's summer garden party!

Meanwhile I've been pointed in the direction of a jolly new ditty on BoobTube - The Thanet Anthem by The Thanet Loops.

Set to the tune of Alicia Keys' Empire State of Mind, it pretty well sums up our septic isle in a way that Visit Kent's description ('Thanet - the birthplace of civilisation') just so doesn't. To give you a taster, here's the opening verse:

Welcome to a place where the best nightclub is Escape
But it's always shut
An art gallery that no-one even really wants
Opened by a slut

Priceless!

Update: It seems the good folk of Newport have now jumped on the Empire State of Mind bandwagon, and have even managed to get on BBC Breakfast with it!

More Fannit Souvenirs

Continuing the theme of yesterday's item, regular contributor Millicent has emailed more suggestions for souvenirs of Thanet, including 'Tickets for the latest blockbuster at Dreamland Cinema', 'A spa weekend at Ramsgate Lido', and 'A shopping spree on Margate High Street'.

Hmmm. Methinks a rich seam has been struck here!

A day out at the Motor Museum

Drinks on board a luxury yacht in Ramsgate's Royal Harbour

A bare knuckle ride at a Margate theme park

A night with the stars at a local theatre

A romantic meal for two at the Marina Restaurant

That's enough Thanet souvenirs - Ed.

Fannit Souvenirs On Facebook

Holy holidaymakers! I see someone with a well-developed sense of humour has added a 'Souvenirs of Thanet' application on Facebook!

Now you can send your friends and family such mementos of our lovely island as 'An afternoon at Queen's House', 'A week's Income Support' or 'Chas and Dave's Greatest Hits'. Just the ticket for Aunt Matilda in Chesham! Here's a shufti at what I've sent so far:

And my personal favourite:

Concrete Evidence

Hearty congratulations to all of you who jumped on my latest 7 day poll asking whether you'd prefer a council with a larger set of cajones when it comes to fronting out developers who develop out the Ile's front, back and sides. A whopping 53 people cast their votes, here's the final tally:

Question: What's the way forward for Fannit?

Developers? No thanks!: 13% (7 votes)
Concrete is my friend!: 9% (5 votes)
More discretion by a stronger council: 77% (41 votes)

An overwhelming majority in favour of our beloved council showing more red cards and fewer green lights. Not that I expect them to take much notice. It seems you only have to give them a bag of toffees these days and they'll re-designate your agricultural land for industrial use before you can say 'JOBS!'.

Happy Landings

Remember Mr Coldfeet, the chap who emailed me recently wanting advice on some of the Ile de Thanet's good points? Well, thanks to all you lovely readers who came up with an exhaustive list of your fave Fannit fings, he's rather rashly decided to cross the Wantsum! He writes:

Dear ECR,

We were glad to see that we were quoted in your Blog (Mr Coldfeet indeed!) - and have decided to invest in some thick socks to enable us to take the plunge and brave life on the East Cliff (starting in Feb/March). As for the Fave Fings which have enticed us, We are amazed by the amount of beautiful buildings that have survived despite a hundred years of neglect and houses at half the price of Brighton ............and a sandy beach! Before we can move we have to sort out a little woodworm and rot first but look forward to a welcoming drink, meanwhile we'll keep as up-to-speed as possible by regularly tuning in.

A Big Thanet Cheers

I'll put the Krug on ice, dear boy!

Favourite Fings

I've received an email from one of my regular, off-island readers. He writes:

We are about to move to your millionaires' playground - but before signing on the dotted line, we wondered if you could advise us of any good things about life on the Eastcliff as your blog tends to be a little on the negative side and we are starting to get cold feet.

Well this is by no means the first time I've been accused of negativity, which mystifies me since I was labouring under the illusion that I was bigging the area up! Hopefully I've redressed the balance with Mr Coldfeet by sending him an exhaustive list of all my favourite things about the Ile de Thanet, which are all far too mawkish and sentimental to publish here without donning a Julie Andrews wig first.

However, it's got me wondering. Do any of you lot have a fave Fannit fing?
